Math placement test

Hi I thougt i read on here that you could take the placement test again.Our son was tired and stressed when he took it and math is his strong subject.If anyone has any knowledge it would be greatly appreciated Thanks
 
Waterbug, I don't have an answer to your specific question, but if he placed in the middle category as opposed to the top category, maybe that's a good thing? Less stress on him for one course in a crowded and difficult schedule. . . .
 
My PC tested for the top calc and chose to do the Calc 1 instead for exactly the reasons mentioned on here- didn't want to get overwhelmed and fall behind the 1st trimester while he is figuring everything out. I figure its their decision now.
 
(I am sooo sorry ... I often mistype when I'm in a hurry... but the thread title just made me laugh out loud... I know exactly what you meant, though)

The best conversation I heard was:
"Dad. You were exactly right. It's not CAN you do Calculus, it's CAN you do calculus when you are bone tired, have Chem to do, have Physics to do, have to clean, have to write TWO papers, and polish you shoes, and try to get all this done so that you have a chance at getting SOME sleep so that you can pay attention in class the next day".

It was from a plebe to his dad, in our parents association. I don't think they would mind my sharing.

So, in response to your question...
If he placed where he did because he was tired, stressed, and such... then that is probably the exact right place for him.. He's going to be tired and stressed the whole rest of his plebe year.
I wouldn't change a thing.. it will work out better in the long run.

In fact, I know kids who did the Math course before Calc1/Calc2, and they have done VERY well.
I think it helped them get their 'sea-legs' in the new surrounding.
I'd almost consider it an advantage.
 
My pc will be in Calculus I as well. Sounds like that's just where he needs to be. Thanks for all the good advise! :smile:
 
does anyone know who the very tough calc 1 teachers are? is Dellwo one of them?
 
None are 'easy'.

Why haven't they posted the pictures yet today

I've been checking all day for the pictures from the 23rd on, where are they? Also, the parents' page now has a link to preregister & prepay for parents' weekend events.
 
the teachers are pretty much the same difficulty, but each has his own quirks. if your kid wants to pass and does what he has to do, he'll pass. it's not impossible. remember, if kids like me made it through, your kids can too
 
How many different math classes are there for the Plebe Candidates? Two or Three?
 
If I remember correctly,
-- a math before Calc1 (think precalc on super steroids)
-- a Calc1 that meets 3x/week, or
-- a Calc1 that meets 4x/week; and
-- a Calc2 that meets 3x/week.
(I don't know if there is a Calc2 that meets 4x/week).

Don't worry, there wayyy more math available if he gets bored. ;)

Very relieved to talk to DS last night - he already has a calc tutor set up. A major concern of mine was that he'd wait until he was too far behind. I think he really understands that it's not going to be easy...

Amazing to sometimes see my old professors still scaring the middies :) I had Dellwo for two calc courses if I remember correctly. I thought him to be interesting, all I remember is him somehow teaching us how to derive boxes and circles. It was "out there" and I was glad to have my high school calc notes. I'm sure he's changed a bit in the last 12 years though.

Probably didn't change that much except on the outside. I teach at my old school--some things never change:biggrin:Good to know DS is in good hands.
