Alright so basically, I'm technically not a freshman, I have 26 credits already but am still going to be attending college for another four years. I am transferring to The Citadel military college next semester for their nursing program. Currently, I'm set up as a 4-year student because I haven't taken any classes pertaining to my major. Now, I am doing Army ROTC, applying for a 4 year ROTC scholarship with the National Guard, making me committed for 8 years, also, I'm joining the Guard as an 09R.
I've seen a few threads, but I really need some clarification on this since my recruiter really doesn't have the detailed answers I want since he was never an 09R or went to college.
So here it is:
Can someone clarify for me whether or not this is a good idea? I wanted to join the Guard to work in the military while also going to school, I was super pumped to go to basic. Then my recruiter said that I'm not going because of it not being required for 09R so now I'm going to be doing what over the summer exactly?
Following around an officer in an NG unit?
What exactly are my responsibilities?
Are they going to teach me everything I need to know about being in the military or is that ROTC's job?
If that's the case, will I not be allowed to be assigned a unit and start working until I've started at my college?
I understand that I would be non-deployable, and since I'm not allowed to go to basic, I don't get the GI bill or anything, so I'm enlisted in a placeholder MOS: so I'm technically not part of the military? Or... am I?
For the 4 years I will be an 09R, will my responsibilities grow or will I just be doing the same thing for 4 years straight until I graduate?
If anyone has some first-hand experience in this, I'd really like some info, I just wasn't provided enough of the detail I want in order to make the right decision.
