I found this forum about a week ago. Great place to get information. My DS is finishing freshman year in High School and I am trying to guide him to preparing himself and his resume to be a strong candidate for USNA or ROTC, or whatever he decides. Being well-rounded is the goal Thanks for all the information you have provided.

Welcome there is so much great info on here, that I wish I had found when my DS was a Freshman. Looking back we should have not only stressed STEM classes but advocated and made sure for a strong STEM schedule. Our HS councilors were great but SA prep was different than College Prep and requires more discipline and Focus. We moved to CA from St Pete. With Centcom in your backyard there are plenty of alumni that will be willing to help and give advice. We had a few SA cadets and Midn that were from St Pete Catholic and we asked teachers and councilors If they could help us meet them and they were great mentors.

Thanks. I am going to push STEM. We have had SA appointees from Gaither and the head faculty member of our NJROTC program is a retired LtCmdr and F-14 instructor. I plan to meet with him in a few weeks to map out a plan of action for my DS that will include classes he should take, varsity sports and NJROTC team activities. My DS loves NJROTC competition and the only problem is conflicting schedules with all his activities

For what it’s worth (and we got lots and lots and lots of conflicting advice) one thing we got that seemed to make sense is to be as well rounded as possible. We didn’t have JROTC at St Pete Catholic and when we asked we were advised by many many people that leadership is important. Don’t be a mile wide and an inch deep. Pick something and take a strong executive leadership position. They are not looking for joiners (being a a bunch of clubs) they are looking for leaders. Another piece of advise we thought was valuable was to be well rounded. Our DS was class VP, officer in his honor society, played varsity football, etc when he went for his COM nomination interview he has lots of things to discuss and they liked his resume because he was well rounded.

All well- said. Thank you!
