So this is absolutely insane. I have been lurking on this forum for a year and have enjoyed the information immensely but swore to myself not to post unless my son received an Appointment this year. Well...... My son received his email late April saying sorry you didn’t make the final cut type of message. Of course we were upset like many on here but had such a terrific back up plan. ROTC scholarship to University of Alabama and merit scholarship so it was going to be a great, free back up plan. He accepted by May 1st and plans were all being made. I put the Bama Bound sign in the yard Thursday so we were really official now. Fast forward to today. Graduation this morning and boys all lined up outside while parents were getting seated. Sons bored or whatever the reason decides to check his email and texts me last time before they walk into ceremony. Holy crap, Air Force email to check your portal. He got on thinking they were just removing all his info or something and he said he saw you have received an appointment!!! He sends me a text right before he walks into ceremony and I couldn’t hold back the tears of joy. Family all around me thinking someone just passed away or something. I whispered down the line family all playing old school telephone and tears were flowing. What a great graduation present. Anyway, my first post and I am beyond excited to become part f this great family.

I am getting goosebumps re reading your post for the fifth time. Congrats to your CADET, yes I said it you have a UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY CADET[emoji631][emoji574]️!

I think everyone who at first learned about this message board, then lurked on here because they didn’t want to be presumptuous that they belonged here and/or didn’t want to tempt fate and then joined and started to uncomfortably posting here because we still think didn’t think we belonged have at one point fantasied or dreamed of a moment like yours. The ups and downs of the folks who share this little section of cyber space is a safe harbor for the emotions of trying to achieve something many Americans don’t even know of,is powerful. It’s so hard to keep your chin up with a TWE waiting around every corner. Right now we are at the one yard line when we found out we need a medical waiver for NROTC and are back to holding out hope. This comes after being recommended for NAPS by MOC then being told no, then getting MOC nomination for KP and being recruited to play sports and then getting the TWE. Then getting NRTOC NO award and now waiting for For waiver for something he has when he was 5 years old. There are days that you can’t help but feeling doubt creep into your mind no matter how hard you try to stay strong.

But you just shared a story that’s picked everyone up today. Your son taught everyone here that you can’t give up hope, you keep fighting on, you never give up because the impossible is possible as long as you keep fighting!!!! Don’t ever give up on your dreams and yourself.

Congratulations from my family. I just shared your story with my DS and he gave your DS a fist pump and said “Way to go” as he went back to his room to study for finals next week, I have a feeling your DS story just increased his studying to 102% because it very clear your son has that extra 2% that not everyone else possesses. Getting there the way he did, has made him stronger than anyone else around and he will appreciate it more than anyone can imagine outside your house.

Enjoying Inprocessing Day you raised a USAFA Cadet !!!!

PS Keep is posted on his journey!

This is amazing! My DS would actually love to get this type of message. He is getting excited about his plan B, but USAFA is still his absolute #1 choice.

Oh, MG, What an AMAZING story! Congratulations to your DS and to you and your family! Just Amazing!

Can we have your sweet plan B?! Congratulations...a great graduation gift indeed!

Congratulations! What a tear jerker moment for your family! It is amazing how superstitious one can get and not wanting to tempt fate with this entire process. I am so glad your son had a solid B plan. Enjoy your whirlwind of activity!

Super congrats! But what was the explanation of why he got the initial rejection a )nd then the about face? (If there was and explanation)

Zero reason given. What’s weird is the letter that came today with the certificate is dated March 27th. He got his rejection email April 16th. My thinking is he was very high on the NWL and someone must have declined for some reason and he was next in line. Just my theory....

USAFA (and I daresay USMA/USNA/USCGA/USMMA) will never tell you why the "no" originally. My take as an ALO is simple: they made as many offers as they planned to make to fill the class. They plan on "X" number of declination's. OP must have been VERY close to being picked. My guess is that more declination's came than were expected, freeing up some slots and v'iola!

Quite an amazing story. And exactly at the right moment! Congrats to your son!

That's one of the best "good news" stories on the forums. For all applying for the class of 2024 to any of the service academies, and come next April when they are stressing out or have given up hope, I hope they are able to find this post. This made my day! I'm happy for your son.

Wow and wow! Very excited for your son, you and the family. Hope you continue to enjoy the ride.
