Russian Destroyer unsafe maneuver

So I'm looking at Fox news online, and they're showing this video of the Russian destroyer motoring up to the USS Chancellorsville. They're panning the entire ship as its racing by, bridge, antenna's, weapon systems, helo, .....and then I see this. At least they didn't moon us, that would have been really inappropriate.

I read that the Admiral Vinogradov (DD572) got "within 50 meters" of USS Chancellorsville (CG-62), but it looks a lot more like 20 meters to me, if you watch the video.

In another article, they said that "USS Chancellorsville was recovering its helicopter and maintaining a steady course and speed when the Vinogradov moved from behind and to the starboard of the U.S. vessel and accelerated and closed to an unsafe distance of 50 to 100 feet."

That sounds like the Chancellorsville was following the rules (since she was ahead and being overtaken), and the Russian vessel was at fault.
Additionally, the ability of the Chancellorsville to maneuver was restricted due to recovering her helo at the time.

Now, the Russian vessel could always say that they were crossing, and that since they were to the starboard of the Chancellorsville - the Chancellorsville should have given way - but that's pretty thin, especially if you look at that wake (see my sketch below).

Pretty silly to be doing this sort of posturing. I don't see what it gets you. Just a high-stakes game of chicken.

Looks like the rooskies are challenging us to a game of Harpoon volleyball.

Like any bully, a punch in the nose--or in this instance a shot into the bow will stop this stuff

> That's all it is..high stakes posturing. . The news media is trying to make these incidents into stories about heightened tensions, but happened all the time during my day.

> That's how you start World War III. It takes a lot of restraint and professionalism to hold your course, and not react to provocation like this.

> Nope, that would never happen, in either direction, and no one would flip off the other either --at least in the age of digital cameras and internet media. ;)

A friend/faculty member who is very close to the situation thinks it is more about Faculty opposition to his decision making - like pushing raises to women and minorities who were not being paid on a par with the rest of the faculty. The more established profs want to be in control of the institution. I saw how this works only too well where I teach, a couple of years prior to me teaching, I was a member of their Board of Visitors and had a front row seat to shenanigans where the faculty brought down a provost and then two yrs later another provost. NOTE: Faculty were part of the decision makers who brought in both provosts. Then, they second guessed decisions time after time. When my wife was Department Chair, the professors in the department could veto her decisions and it took great efforts for her to literally get anything done.

By the way, my friend on the scene saw the margarita machine and it was NOT in the President's Office and what they're calling working hours are after 5 at a place where most of the staff comes and goes at odd hours because of evening events, etc.

And now the Admiral has left the building and cut short hos tour by at least a year. Probably right to retirement.

Wrong forum?

The best response to the Russian's cry for attention would be to stay cool, professional, on-course and just display the photos and video for the world to see, but otherwise ignore it and carry out the mission.
