New Student Indoctrination (Summer 2019)

I will be attending the first cycle (July 2-22). My school is Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL. Anyone else in first cycle?

Does anyone know much about what it’ll be like? Is it supposed to be closer to Plebe summer? Are they giving you your uniforms then?
They give you a packing list that includes black or blue swim shorts, white towels, laundry bag, mole skin for blister protection from boots, etc. They arrived on a Sunday and yes they received uniforms, water bottle equipment,
Tshirts, etc. It was a tough few weeks, similar activities to Plebe summer. They stay up on watch, do laundry, target shooting, fire fighting exposure, swim tests, gas masks, inspection, all things physical, and drills. Enjoyed getting the opportunity to ask questions and discovered NROTC was a right fit for him.

Anyone know when we will receive the official packing list?

I was wondering the same thing. Welcome letter in the original package mentions the official packing list, but nothing since then.

we have not received any info but we had a friend at regular boot camp there recently (Navy SEAL program) and he was given 1 phone call home at arrival and then a postal address for mailing letters after that. he did get some phone time after the first week or 2 on these pay phones if i recall but never on a mobile phone. mobile phone was placed in a lockup situation for the duration.

Hi There! I am new to this group/ page and have enjoyed the plethora of valuable information shared. Thank you!

Our daughter will be attending NSI - Block 1 in 2 weeks as a NROTC- Nursing Option 4 year scholarship winner set to attend the University of Michigan this fall. She transferred her scholarship from UPenn to UMich. We have wondered if this transfer had impacted her communication stream. Though she made this transfer in April her NSI packet came to her via UPenn (email). After a number of contacts, she learned that she was to follow that pathway of UPenn direction but instead submit all of her necessary documents to UMich NROTC rather than the contact info designated as the UPenn point of contact. She flipped the submission immediately to UMich upon learning of the direction. She will bring the required hard copy of that complete bundle to NSI.

She is excited though certainly anxious about the unknown and limited information available as her check in date rapidly approaches. She has reached out to her future unit in the hope she may gain some clarification on final details due to some conflicting information rec'd to date. We will be driving her to NSI and dropping her there on July 2 and picking her up following graduation 3 weeks later. While in early information rec'd there was mention of a provided packing list that would be forthcoming that has since been something we have heard of no further. That said, on the enclosed link it notes that *Midshipment Candidates that are being dropped off will not be allowed to bring in any outside belongings other than a cell phone and wallet.
Medicine? Feminine hygiene items? General hygiene items? Appropriate lady gear? Dental retainers? I have seen recommendations in the above thread to bring moleskin and good running shoes as "musts" but as I read the above-shared statement there does not seem to be room for said items. This is, however, leaving us a bit perplexed. Maybe that is all part of the gig. Expect the unexpected. Trust the system..... eh. Alas, I think there are some valid clarifications needed. Will cell phone use, in fact, be allowed in down time per the allowance to bring to check in?

Might you all have any intel on this or be able to share feedback? It seems that she is not alone waiting for the previously identified packing list based on what I have read here. Admittedly, this is our first trip to this rodeo.

Are there any other NROTC- Nursing Options 2023 in the mix? Does anyone know how many were awarded this year? Our daughter was also awarded the Army ROTC Nursing Scholarship but it was a fast decision for her to go Navy. This has long been a mission she was working to accomplish. Does anyone have a grasp for if/ how there are any nursing option specfic variances to the NSI and overall NROTC experience?

Thanks!!!! ...so grateful !!!!

*my apologies for my verbose nature here .... cheers.

Congratulations to your DD and her scholarship, as well as her great decision to Go Blue! I hope your DD enjoys her next four years there immensely. My DS will be a 2/c there in the fall. It's a great unit and school. As far as the gear goes, it seems like there will have to be some clarification and it seems no one has received an official packing list yet. I'm going to guess that she will be allowed to bring hygiene gear with her, since I doubt they are going to want to supply that to everyone and because candidates that are flying in are being instructed to bring this. Why would you have some bring and some not? As you are probably aware this is a new program. Trial run with a limited number of units last year and first year for everyone, so probably still working out the kinks. That said, expect communication to be last minute. That seems to be the standard; hurry up and wait.

Thank so much for your awesome feedback. This is definitely encouraging to read. We will all hang tight ..... and maintain control of our Type A planner personalities. It does seem the basics would be on an allowed list and that would be forthcoming. We drive over to IL from State College, PA (yes we can walk to Beaver Stadium from our house and our daughter is alllll in belting out “Go Blue” every chance she gets) on July 1. I guess there is “time”

Again, our great thanks for your feedback and support as we all navigate this new journey! It’s great to hear your son is having a great experience!

I'm following this because our DS (Penn State NROTC) heads to NSI on July 1st and I am wondering what is meant by "...one set of proper civilian attire". We just purchased new running shoes or him to break in during his daily runs leading up to departure.

Your DS will become very familiar with proper civilian attire (PCA). He should be getting information on this and other topics from his unit. PCA consists of chinos, khakis or whatever you want to call them; a collared shirt, such as a polo or other button down; and casual closed toe shoes, such as loafers (but not athletic shoes).

Re packing list as well as what else you need to know: last year the unit supplied the list. It DID include hygiene items.

The unit supplied all info really. So if you aren’t hearing anything it’s in your interest to ask. Just as in the application process, you have to be proactive. You are still just a Candidate, and even once a Midshipman / Ensign / Admiral you’re going to have to chase down what you need. Make sure UM knows about the transfer.

Watching your kid become that kind of capable is awesome!

Also, re: communication during Indoc: last year DS made the arrival phone call you can observe in any Great Lakes intake video on YouTube (watch also for an idea of what training happens at Great Lakes), and one letter home. You’all are going to be there a week longer so you may get to write two letters (they’re keepsakes for your parents so put a little effort into them). DS’ return flight schedule changed so he called about that (giving me a nifty scare thinking he might’ve been injured since we weren’t supposed to get any calls according to the initial arrival call). But once he got back to the civilian world with his cell phone he was non-stop talking (when he wasn’t eating, sleeping, or flying). Apparently my chatty Cathy hadn’t enjoyed the lack of chat of Indoc. He was hoarse from the shouting but his mind still needed to unload.

It’s going to be a great experience. Not all fun but really cool stuff more than makes up for it.

As DS finishes CORTRAMID I will share this: he says in every training half the mids are kvetching and the other half have to ignore to it. So which half are you?

My son is also in first cycle july 2 - 22. I am going to both ceremonies drop off and pick up.

Another Minnesota Mom :) Wondering if you might take pix & video to share if the LiveStream doesn't work on graduation day? PM me for another way to connect?

*my apologies for my verbose nature here .... cheers.

I tried to send you a private message (with you and another MN Mom in this group) but wasn't allowed to do so (no clue why), but maybe we can take solace in the fact we're all in the same 'lack of information' mode right now and see what July brings! If you can message me directly, I'm happy to connect outside of this message thread.
