DS is diligently filling out his scholarship application and got to the question regarding intended major. The application allows one to choose among 5 major categories (nursing, general, science/technical, engineering, and another I can’t remember). DS is pretty confident about his choice of science/technical, but not sure on the precise major at this point. Does the choice of intended major factor into the scholarship decisions (I’ve seen people say no on this forum for AROTC, but then why would they ask?)? I’m imagining it is potentially difficult to switch from one category to another (e.g. science/tech to general), but are any approvals required to switch majors with the category should he earn a scholarship?

I am struggling to pick a precise major too! However, I do wish your DS good luck on picking their major and hopefully it is the right one!

Cadets are able to change or declare a different major upon starting school. The primary exception to this rule is if an applicant declares Nursing and receives a Nurse specific scholarship. Once the contract is signed, the first Change of Major (COM) will be approved at PMS level, any subsequent COMs must go be approved at Cadet Command. If it is a Nurse scholarship, the first COM must be approved at Cadet Command and normally the Cadet will loose at least one semester of benefits.

My DS did NOT choose a STEM major and still earned a campus based AROTC scholarship four years ago (He commissioned last month). My understanding is that the Army does not care what your major is (except for nursing) so long as you complete it on time and with good grades! I am guessing that they ask what your major is for data tracking purposes.
