Hello friends,
  • When is the letter of recommendation spot open for noms? (Can we submit them mid summer?)
  • Can my teacher submit nomination letters at the same time as the academy letters of rec in mid summer?
  • What month best to ask my junior yr teachers to write a rec (since during summer school and office is closed)
  • Do teachers send nom recommendations online or through mail (letter)?

Sorry about the plethora of questions, but Thank you to all who take the time to read/respond:thumb:

1) Every MOC is (or could be) different, both in application requirements and deadlines. Make sure you follow your MOC requirements.
2) The Academy (at least USNA) teacher "recommendation" is actually more of an evaluation. USNA will send the teachers and evaluation form to be submitted online. (Tell your teachers to keep an eye out for the email -- I've heard stories about the email going into SPAM folders).
3) The nomination and Service Academy application processes are completely independent of each other ... as a practical matter, its probably easier for the teacher if you tell them to expect the Admissions evaluation, and ask for the nomination at the same time. (Be prepared to explain the difference to your teacher, this is probably a completely foreign concept to them).

Our DS is doing apps for 4 SA's and all sources of nomination available to him. Each nomination source has different requirements for him. One requires letters of recommendation be mailed snail mail (sent certified mail w/ signature required), 2 are uploaded direct in app, although one accepts PDF only and the other allows multiple formats. Essay prompts are similar but different enough that he is writing 4 separate essays for noms. Some accept formal SAT and ACT from College Board, one asks for his username and log in (saved me money, loved this option). Just go through the steps for each one and follow the instructions to the word. He sends stuff in according to instructions, waits for apps to update. If after 3 weeks they haven't updated, he reaches out to appropriate point of contact to verify they are in receipt of his application materials. I would hate to trust college board to send scores, find out Sept 15 that nom source didn't receive them and be too late to get scores in by our Oct. 1 deadline. Good luck to you, @fobzero

An MOC requests username and login? That’s very odd to me. Interesting.

I found it a little odd, but they have a section detailing how it won't be misused. Saved us fee charges, only problem with that particular MOC is they have had the log ins for months and haven't marked his test scores "received/complete". And a huge portion of the site is 'under construction' so we are patiently waiting. He emailed the office asking for 'no longer under construction' dates and has heard nothing back. Grrrrrr

I get that it’s a money saver, etc. but wouldn’t they have access to your personal data? I would think they wouldn’t even want that opportunity for all the things that could go wrong with having that access. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I can’t imagine giving a political office access to my personal data. Or an office even asking for it. Maybe it’s common?

Good luck to you...hope the GRRRR goes away.

I had all of those thoughts. He has met her in person at prior Academy seminars, and recently met her in DC when he was there for Boys Nation (cool picture of that on the steps of the capitol). I was ok with it based on it being a user name and password he only uses for SAT ACT, not one he uses across other platforms. Thank you for the good vibes re GRRRR. Here's hoping.
