I dunno exactly where to ask this: is everyone at their respective Academies called a Cadet? What are they called at the beginning of their Academy careers at each place? I know that USAF they are Doolies- but what are they called at other places?

Inquiring minds wanna know...

USNA: midshipman, plural, midshipmen. Plebes the first year. Informally, youngsters, the second year, as 3/c.

SA/Formal Name/ Freshman nickname
USMA/ cadet / Plebe
USAFA / cadet / Doolie
USCGA / cadet (surprisingly) / Swab
USNA / midshipman /Plebe
USMMA / midshipman / Plebe

The above are right. Terms like Plebe, Youngster, Cow, Doolie, Swab, Firstie are all very common nicknames for some of the ranks.

I believe when students from any maritime academy go to sea in commercial ships for training they are called cadets and get the cadet rate of pay. I’m sure our master mariners will fill us in.

I did not know this. Any reason why? Or just because?

There is a story about the old salty Senior Chief Bosuns Mate, as he pushed a wheelbarrow, with a square wheel, down the deck a young seaman approach him. The seaman said "Master Chief, why does your wheelbarrow have a square wheel?" the answer "Because that's how we've always done it kid."

I really have no idea, I think the word originates from the french baking world, but really I have no idea why it is, it's just the way it is. If you called them a midshipman on a ship, people wouldn't know what you are talking about. They're referred to as cadets in every other country too...

Cadet is the job title aboard the ship. For example, it would be correct to say, "The deck cadet on the APL Guam is Midshipman Smith." The master on the T/S Empire State is Capt. Rick Smith, or was Capt. Smith.

Thanks for the explanation and the laugh!

Well this was fun! Thank you all for sharing and for your help! I love learning about the other academies! (DS2 is applying to USAFA and USNA- OMG! This mama is hoping the Long Blue Line extends...)

Which blue would that be? One Blue Line is a tad shorter than the other.

The slightly shorter one: I have a Doolie at USAFA right now, so, I'd like to see that part extend a bit, hehe (I forget two academies use that moniker!)
