why do we call USMA West Point, USNA Annapolis, but we don't call USAFA Colorado Springs?

probably because the ONLY thing worth a crap in West Point, New York is the army military academy. And the only thing worth a crap in Annapolis, Maryland is the Naval academy. While the city of Colorado Springs had many other things going for it; and if you were to say; "I'm going to school at Colorado Springs"; the typical answer would be: "Ok; which college/university. There's 13 of them". Basically; west point and annapolis were established for the military academies. The city of colorado springs was already here and established before the air force academy was established.

There is NO TOWN called West Point. West Point is an Army Post and has been an Army post since the Revolutionary War. That would have been the 18th century for those of you from Wyoming.
It's called West Point because it is an Academy located on an Army Post - the name of the post became associated with the US Military Academy.

Annapolis is the Capital of Maryland. Honestly, the only people I have ever refer to the Naval Academy as "Annapolis" is in the movies.
I don't think the PR machine at USNA refers to the Academy as "Annapolis"; maybe some mids to.

Christcorps - this was a good question. Too bad you didn't get the answer correct. Nice try though.

Wow, you usually can get an answer close to the truth, this time you are so off the mark your credibility is at stake.

Annapolis established for the Naval Academy?

You need to go back to school and study early American history.

Unless you think the US Naval Academy was around in 1694.

Sorry I didn't put the "tongue and cheek" humor marks down. I thought the smart a$$ reply would have been obvious. Guess not.

Actually, I'm originally from New York; and being from that area; we include the north-east areas, including maryland, deleware, jersey, etc... as part of that area. The areas of west point and annapolis are actually very beautiful and busy areas. Sorry I didn't make the cynical response clear.

I got what you where trying to get at CC, but then again I am just another knuckle dragging western state troglidyte that needs to be banished to a cave so the world will be a more acceptable place for our enlightened progressive breathren.

JAM, BTW Bullets cousin who was commissioned from the USNA calls it Annapolis, our friends son attends, class of 12, calls it Annapolis, everyone in Md and VA calls it Annapolis.

I bet most people from MD think Baltimore is the capitol! and not Annapolis.

Our of curiosity do the USMA cadets say they went to the USMA or West Point. Same for graduating do they say USMA or West Point. Most of the Army guys we know would say I went to West Point, not the USMA. Most AFA grads, will say I went to the Academy...or the Zoo, or to a little engineering school in the rockies!

Actually, yes, many cadets/midshipmen call it Annapolis....and that was BEFORE the movie! AHHHHHHHH! Say it aint so!

Same with Kings Point v. Merchant Marine Academy.

Maybe also because some people are alive that lived in Colorado Springs before the Air Force Academy (and even the Air Force) existed.

Also, USMMA is sometimes called Kings Point, and USCGA isn't called New London (facts that would blow holes in the first statement, but hey, KP is older than AFA anyway.)

As a USNA grad who was there when the movie came out and a resident of the VA/DC/MD area for 19 years before attending, I had never heard anyone refer to the Academy as Annapolis until after the movie came out.

SO all you heard them refer to it is the Acadmeny? I think where I may be taking this is a different route. If you are from the MD/VA area you say you go to the Academy. Start moving in a bigger circle and you may hear Naval Academy or Annapolis, when they the next question comes out...which one? After saying it for the 1000th time you will turn and say I went to Annapolis.

The movie may have made it more pronounced, but for the last 3 yrs this thread always pops up about why the AFA doesn't go by C Springs.

West Point is also a tourist destination for history buffs, thus people call it West Point. Annapolis is a b& b tourist town where many people (civies) just think that Annapolis is a lure to visit, but not a reson.

I will say that as an AF wife, we always call them as the following
1. Academy (AFA)
2. Napolis grad
3. West Poinnter
4. Coast Guard grad

....everyone in Md and VA calls it Annapolis.

Not sure about VA, but that's definately NOT true in MD.

To a Marylander, "Annapolis" definitely refers to the city, not the US Naval Academy.

Most people in MD call it "the Naval Academy."

I bet most people from MD think Baltimore is the capitol! and not Annapolis.

I know of no person from MD who thinks Baltimore is the capital of MD.

To hear someone call USNA Annapolis is a pretty good indication they don't know what they are talking about. The only time a mid/grad would use it is like Pima says, to explain to someone who doesn't have a clue that it is the West Point for the Navy, Annapolis.

Actually, for mids and grads, hearing the Academy referred to as Annapolis is kind of like fingernails on a chalk board.

Yeah Pima, i refer to USAFA as "The Academy" as well.

I don't know if that's an insult to people from Maryland or to Americans in general...

Don't look into that too much. It's a good truth. What was the statistic done a couple years ago where some insane number of Americans couldn't even find USA on a world map?!

“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh… people out there in our nation don’t have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and… I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., err, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our...."
