Good Evening everyone,
I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide any advice that would be helpful as I finish up my application up for VMI. I am 17 years old, I currently reside in NY, and I am applying to VMI Regular Decision (I will be applying to other schools as a back up but this is my top school). I would like to give you some insight about myself. I have about a 93 gpa overall average which is about equivalent to 3.7-3.8 on the 4.0 scale for the combination of my Freshman year through my Junior year. I’m currently and have been taking rigorous classes in school such as AP, honors, and College Now. I also do many extra-curriculars such as band, chorus, NHS, sports, and other clubs that require leadership and community service. My academic status and physical fitness is in check. However, it's my SAT score that I'm a little worried about and what affect it has on my academic record, the score I received was an 1100. Do you have any pointers that would potentially benefit my academic as well as my social profile? I know VMI is the School for me and I am just trying to get as much advice as well as information that I can get! Also, what are your thoughts on the chances of myself being accepted?

@NY6711 - if you go on the VMI website you can see stats for the class of 2022. Your SAT score is below the mean composite score of 1210. This doesn't mean you won't get in, just that the rest of your stats will need to be strong. Have you taken the SAT more than once? If not, do you think you could do better with some prep courses? You mentioned some EC's, which is good - were you team captain or in leadership positions in any of your EC's?

You say VMI is the school for you so I assume you have visited already and/or have a friend or family connection? Learn as much as you can about what it is really like. VMI is a great school, but not for everyone. Congratulations for considering a challenging but potentially very rewarding path.

Good luck.

+1 to Dadof2. Retake and improve that SAT. Also try the ACT. Some folks do better on one over the other. Improving your SAT score will help all of your college applications.

I am Currently the President of Interact Club which is in partnership with the Rotary Club and the club is solely based on Community Service. I was one of the Captains on my Soccer team and I did visit the school in February. Once the Cadet started talking and I got the tour, I knew it was the place for me! And if the SAT is a major setback, I do agree that I should retake it.

I think I will retake it. Thank you!

Khan Academy has a good, free SAT prep service. You can even link your khan academy account to the college board so it customizes your prep based on previous test scores. I took the SAT three times, started with a 1140 and ended with a 1380. Find a study method that works for you and stay consistent with it, overtime you will see improvements.

I have used it a little before and I do believe it helps but I was never consistent with it. I will for sure start a study schedule and use it to my advantage before the test in October. Thank you for the advice and what an improvement on your score!

NY6711, also strongly suggest you take another visit to VMI and schedule an interview with the admissions staff. This is a good way to get on their radar in a positive way and to ask questions and learn more about the Institute. Interviews are highly encouraged for students on the borderline for the rigorous admissions standards. Good luck!

Try the ACT as well. Some students do better on ACT than SAT. And vice versa. But worth the effort to get the score you want to achieve to give you your best shot.

I leave Wednesday the 16th for the Overnight! I also retook the SAT yesterday and should receive the score on the 18th as well. I’m crossing my fingers hoping I did better. While I’m there though, I am going to try and talk to the Admission Counselors!

When I receive my SAT score and it doesn’t work for me I just might have to take the ACT

Good luck to you! My son is currently a Rat.

Hopefully your SAT score increases with yesterday’s test. However, do not be discouraged if it doesn’t. It appears that you have many other qualities and strengths that VMI looks for. It is No ordinary school, so make sure you know what you agree to when (if) you are accepted. My son’s Rat Mass began with 515 and are now down to 469. I know some who have left because of medical reasons, but I believe many aren’t mentally prepared when they arrive.

Enjoy your overnight visit. Be prepared with any questions you might have for the Rats you’ll be rooming with.
Good luck again 😉

Absolutely agree with Emptynest: make sure this is what you want. In addition to many leaving because they aren't mentally prepared, many also leave for lack of being physically prepared. If you go to VMI, make sure you are mentally prepared and in the best physical shape of your life! Good luck with your SAT score and good luck with the interview.

I will let you know how the overnight goes! I can’t wait to fly down and visit!!

I did end up scheduling an interview with one of the admissions staff. I’ll be sure to update you on how that goes!

Just to give you guys an update. I was very surprised to receive my Acceptance Letter into VMI literally a few minutes ago. Usually they send out Acceptance letters around early to mid December but I guess they decided to send them out early this year! I will be majoring in Biology and cannot wait to attend the institute. The anticipation has been killing me but it’s a big relief now that I know I’m in. The hard work finally paid off!! Big thank you to everyone who offered their advice to me while I was going through the Admissions Process!!

My Rat is now home on Thanksgiving furlough. He takes it one day at a time. Some days it’s one meal at a time.

Make sure you’re mentally and physically prepared for VMI. It’s a great place to be from, but not a great place to be [emoji6] That’s what I’ve been told.
