Air Force ROTC Scholarships / Admissions - AMA

Last Friday, DS was awarded a Type 2 AFROTC tech scholarship. Do most schools allow stacking of a ROTC scholarship with other merit-based scholarships a student may receive? Also, is there an available list of colleges who offer free room & board to AFROTC scholarship recipients? Same question regarding any schools who waive out of state tuition for scholarship recipients.

Question: I was under the impression All HSSP Scholarships are awarded/announced later in the year (for those graduating high school 2020). Based on your post, it looks as though your DS was awarded a scholarship as of last month (Sept). Is that to say, scholarships are awarded immediately rather than a bulk announcement after the January 17th deadline?

Yes, scholarships are awarded after each board meets. There is no bulk drop.

Are results from the most recent board coming out today?

DS got an email today saying that he didn't win a scholarship and will be considered again in November. Is it realistic to expect a different outcome in future board reviews or is it more likely than not that he will not get a scholarship. He thought he was competitive ( at least that's what the interviewing officer told him) he is a varsity swimmer ( four years - CA State CIF Division I Championship team) 33 composite ACT (with 33 in Math and 35 in Science) and a 3.7 GPA ( took a very challenging course schedule with AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, ...)

Thanks for your insight.

Our son today received notification of being awarded a Type 1. We are excited for him. He has worked hard. Now we need to await acceptance to his first ranked college choice. Is anyone aware of or had experience with schools that match room and board to type 1 recipients? Or perhaps how such information can be found? His current top choices as listed were UPenn, Yale, Harvard.

Google AFROTC College Locator. At the link plug in the school, click ‘see more’ and they’ll give info on any additional money. I hope your son has a safe choice or two along with those top choices. :) good luck.

DD awarded Type 2, technical. Not sure what bumped her out of Type 1 contention, but thinking maybe she interviewed poorly or SAT score wasn't high enough.

Congrats to the scholarship awardees. Keep in mind if you are reboarded, you will get another chance. Good luck. The dates provided on the post earlier wad the last board meeting date, not result date, my apologies for the confusion.

Contact the school as that would be a case by case. Congrats! Your DS competed against numerous Harvard applicants who got a Type 2 FYSA!

Probably Ohio State. He wants to go deep into 20c Military History at a big liberal arts/research university that's also strong in Physics. That leaves less than a handful of Tier I research universities. Good choices each but very few.

Saves us a lot of time and money (and grief) in college apps...

My son has been working on trying to get his run time for the AFROTC scholarship PT test but is seeing very little results. He completed 56 push ups, 53 sit-ups, but hit a 14:04 1.5 mile time. Is this something that will disqualify him from being able to get any scholarship?

Stew Smith is a former Navy SEAL, USNA staff officer and now a well-known fitness professional. He has workouts for the CFA, ROTC PRTs, etc.

He can do this, given his age.

I'd be really interested in the profile for Type 1 winners if you can give any insight there.

@AROTCPMS I can't seem to find the private message function in here, perhaps I am to infrequent a user to have earned such a function? Anyway, I would be glad to share a profile of our sons stats if you would like to PM me. I don't feel it's overly beneficial to put that in the public forum like this because I fear it becomes a yardstick by which other young candidates measure themselves and if they find that their numbers are slightly lower it only serves to invoke unneeded anxiety and worry. So for respect of the great candidates awaiting board decision I would be willing to share in PM. I think it reasonable to concede that the numbers are important but there are other factors unmeasured by SAT or GPA alone and these young folks shouldn't get too hung up on the stats.
