Hello all. I am currently a junior looking to go to either USNA or USAFA and I am a gymnast. Naturally, I have been looking at the gymnastics teams for both academies and I know that USAFA has one since two of my friends are currently on it. I looked on USNA's website and it stated that there was only gymnastics available for the men, but I heard from a USNA graduate that there was a gymnastics team for the women and my coach said she once competed against the women's gymnastics team. I was wondering if they used to have one and got rid of it or what? If any one can help me with this I would be really happy.

No gymnastics team for women, but you can help manage teh team, and therefore train with them. But women cannt compete, there just isnt enough interest to start a varsity gymnastics team for women

I know this is the naval academy board, but since we are talking about gymnastics, I was wondering if anyone knew what division USAFA gymnastics team is? Thanks so much for your help!

Female gymnasts at the USNA can sometimes move into diving or cheerleading.

What's the possibility of a club sport in Gymnastics? Girls Tennis was a club sport and was recently elevated to varsity.

Don't know. Maybe one of the moderators can weigh in on what is involved in starting up a new club sport.

As someone very closely involved in trying to get a new club sport started, it is near impossible, but they'll keep giving you hope.

Basically you'll put in an application each year demonstrating why your Extracurricular Activity deserves upgrade to a club sport, including things like facilities, coach, who you'll compete against, etc. You'll do this once a year, probably get some false hope, and then get rejected.

Then again, if you're promoting a new women's sport, you've got some politics on your side and might be able to make it happen.

Now if you can't get an officially approved club sport, you can still compete, you'll just basically be doing it on your own time. You'll probably be able to get it approved as an ECA, but unless something's changed, that means tournaments, etc. are on your own liberty time. This means that anytime you want to bring a plebe along for a full weekend or even just a Sunday, you will be putting up a special request chit (and there's a pretty good chance it will not get approved). You'll probably be able to get a few Movement Orders to cover tournaments, but chances are you'll probably be using your own weekends for most tournaments (we were basically only able to get a MO twice my entire firstie year, and otherwise used our own weekends).

If I sound bitter about a lot of this, it is because I was very bitter about it. If you are not already a club sport or one that the Academy thinks can get it some visibility, you will essentialy be out of luck, and be using your own time and resources to make things happen, and will be heavily limited. I don't mean to crush any hopes of doing things on your own, because it can be done, but expect quite a bit of difficulty in making it happen.

^^^^

That however was under the last dant and current supt by the time you would get there a completely different administration could have completely different policies but I agree with steve and you can't count on anything.

To true, although it has a lot to do with athletic director too.

Don't want to discourage anyone; it's a pain in the ass representing the Academy and not getting support or credit, but still worth it if it's something you enjoy.

USNA has women's gym on the club level

I was recruited and competed for the varsity Navy women's gymnastics team in the late 80's. I was a plebe during it's inaugural season in 1986/87. The effort to elevate from club to varsity status was spearheaded by coach Shirley Tranquill, who also just happened to be the wife of the head coach of the football team (Gary Tranquill). Unfortunately he was fired after that season ('86) so Shirley also left. We had a different coach every year following that, so recruiting was non-existent and the team just never gained any momentum. Navy discontinued the team in '93 along with the fencing teams. My DD who is just finishing her youngster year did gymnastics up until high school when she switched to diving. She was recruited for the class of 2017. She says they just started an ECA gymnastics club at Navy with a long term hope of turning first into an intercollegiate club sport and then Varsity, which will be a pretty long uphill climb.
