Air Force ROTC Scholarships / Admissions - AMA

Did not expect him to get an email so quickly as the Board week just ended, but DS was awarded a Type 2, any major, any college, 4-year AFROTC scholarship today. Posting this update only to let those who are worried about metrics (GPA or ACT/SAT) know that they should not let any "weak score" be a deterrent. DS had ROUGH Freshman and Sophomore years academically for personal reasons (family death and personal illness plus injury) and he almost didn't bother applying as we're talking only a few hundredths over the minimum for GPA. BUT, he did apply, and he persevered. Wonderful to see the AF taking a true "holistic" view of these applicants and choosing it over one or two metrics. Best wishes for all - go out and chase those dreams, no matter the odds!

I am not disagreeing, but want to say that it is important for candidates to understand regarding their approach is they get a ROUGH start or patch, what they are looking for is a positive progression academically. This usually also can come across during the interview. Hence, why they do the interview.
~ I see in your transcript, academically, you hit a rough patch your fall semester sophomore yr., is there a reason why?

Yes, totally agree - resilience and turning obstacles into growth with self-improvement make all the difference!

DS got notified he is being re-boarded in Dec. I know it’s not the end of the rd but still sad for him. He takes another round of SAT Dec 7th. Currently he sits at a 1260 I believe. If he improves that can it be added to his ROTC profile for future boards?

I don't know that the scores will be released fast enough that they can be sent and received by AFROTC in time for the Dec board. SAT scores take about 2-3 weeks to be released, and he takes it on 7 Dec and the AFROTC board meets Dec 16-20.

I was thinking more along the line if he ended up being re-boarded again in Feb.

Good afternoon! I'm currently a Scholarships & Admissions Advisor for Air Force ROTC. If you have any questions, please let me know. I will not chance you even though I have the boards.
Good afternoon! My ds was submitted for November boards. He got an email last week that he was not awarded this time, but would be reconsidered for December boards. Will he continue to be reconsidered through all boards until he is awarded, or will he only be reconsidered in December? Also, he is understandably quite disappointed. Is there anything you can share that might help him stay positive? What are the odds that one might be denied initially, and go on to be awarded a scholarship at a later board?

As per my last post, you are only reboarded once. I can't tell the odds as the competition varies. Keep his head up, he's still in the game.

You are only reboarded once.
Do you mean that an applicant can only meet two boards at most, i.e., he/she doesn't get a scholarship the first board they meet, then they get reboarded just once and meet the next board, and if they don't get the award at the second board then that is it? Thanks for all of your input.

Exactly.

I don’t think this is a 100% true as my DS was reboarded to the November board, and just heard he will be reboarded again for the December board.

Thanks for the double-check. I thought I was going nuts!!!

If I recall correctly it was about 4 or 5 yrs ago that they did only reboard 1x, it was the very last board they held in the end of March. Anyone that was not selected during their 1st round were basically placed on hold until the end. I think they did that for only 1 yr.

Once you are offered a scholarship do you have to Accept/Decline before knowing where you will be going? DS went to "Accept" the scholarship and was asked what college he was going to and what his major was going to be. He doesn't know yet as he hasn't received any application results. Should just best guess it?

Just want to make sure that my son isn't missing anything required for the AFRTOC scholarship application. No essays? No recommendation letters? No resume?
Also wondering how context is given to the GPA with no class rank (good), but no school profile either (bad). Or do they place premium weight on the SAT as a result?

Doesn't matter, as long as it wasn't a tech scholarship and DS is planning non-tech.
