Hello, I am an applicant and on 10/28 I received a couple of DQ codes. With a month passing without either word from USAFA and FIle being complete without nomination yet with MOC Interview this weekend I was considering if these conditions to be waivered by USAFA. Thank you.

D227.20Scoliosis/kyphosis
D155.80Astigmatism in excess of 3.00 diopters
D154.10Current nystagmus other than physiologic "end-point nystagmus"
D231.80Speech impairment
D154.20Strabismus - exotropia

That’s a lot of stuff going on.

1. Did the DODMERB or the waiver authority ask your for any AMI? Maybe x-rays so the Cobb angle could be quantified?

2. What’s your eye glasses prescription? Are you correctable to 20/20? What’s your distant and near vision uncorrected?

3. Nystagmus - it’s possible the astigmatism, if really bad, can be causing this. I’m assuming the eye doctor saw this? Problem is being tired and stressed can make nystagmus worse. Any idea from your own doctors the cause? Did you have as an infant?

4. Speech impairment - explain this a bit. Hopefully, you had as a child and all is good now.

5. Strabismus exotropia - one of your eye goes outward. Is this easily noticed by people? Or is the degree so small that no one notices the deviation? Problem with this is double vision.

@GoCubbies
1. Yes they did but that was before the DQ letter came out.

2. Dont know exact precription but my eye sight is 20/25 corrected and 20/50 or so uncorrected

3. Shouldve told background but this has been since birth and have had mhch improvement over years causing the vison problems about but after 2 surgies and countless optomitrist vist its in decent condition.

4. Yes. As a child till HS when was tookeb off of needing a thetapost for most part i am excellebt and understandable

5. It is noticeable when im focising on somthing but double vison not a issue. Relates vack to ngystmaus too.

Also note, i know i cant be a pilot with these so sadly thats not my goal.

1. DId you have to get x-rays? If so, then DODMERB saw the angles exceeded the standards so you got DQ'ed for it. A waiver will depend on how much you're off from the standards. Also, you probably had to answer questions about your activity and any potential associated symptoms.

2. I'm almost sure the USAFA wants you correctable to 20/20. If you're not correctable to 20/20 then they see you as NOT potentially pilot qualified. USAFA wants as may kids as possible to have a high chance of passing the aviation standards when getting admitted. With you being corrected to only 20/25, that's a huge hit for the USAFA. Probably not waiverable for USAFA.

The question now is why can't you be corrected to 20/20? Is your astigmatism that bad? If your astigmatism is really bad, then the USAFA doesn't wait that. Do you have keratoconus or cataracts? These will be among the questions asked by the USAFA waiver reviewers. It's not normal for a kid your age to NOT be correctable to 20/20.

3. Did you have surgery of your eye muscles?

4. Shouldn't be an issue getting a waiver if your speech is intelligible now.

5. You may not have double vision because your brain is used to getting visual signals from only 1 eye when we normally get visual signals from both eyes. Exotropia is definitely a DQ. Your depth perception may be off too. You might have to do additional tests if you haven't done them yet for any waiver consideration. Do you recall doing tests like red lens test, AO suppression test, or AO vectograph stereopsis test?

@GoCubbies
1. Yes, I had a possible DQ and need waivers for an Xray for AMI then got DQ later.
2. My vision is improving by appointment but because of a mistake from the nurses during delivery, it caused come issue causing the nystagmus which has made my eye weird. This is why I needed 2 eye surgeries on the muscles I believe directly.
5. I had to do a red lens test during eye exam for normal visit for dodmets but they took it and didn't say anything worried them after the test was done.

Cubbies I think I read on one of your other posts where you claimed to not be an eye doc.... no longer buying it after this thread...
