Navy 2020 NSI dates

Expanding to a third session makes sense if they are trying to get more college programmers through NSI, plus info on another thread was that SMC midshipmen were going to have to go this year as well.

I think there was a thread discussing who went to NSI last year. If you are a 4 year NROTC, including MO, is it safe to say you would be offered a spot to 1 of the 3 sessions?

Hopefully, since I don't think the scholarship is activated unless they complete NSI training, right? DS has mailed all his NSI paperwork in and was told the earliest he would know which session he is assigned is April.

id call it more of a requirement than an offer if you are on 4 year scholarship

No. That wouldn't be correct. You would be REQUIRED to attend one of the three sessions, and it's possible they might tell you which one.

There are rumors of requiring College Program Participants to attend NSI entering 3C years. Last year incoming College Programmers were not required to attend NSI and now will have a full year of NROTC under their belts. Has anyone heard anything about this? We are curious as the NROTC Guidelines say rising 3C and rising 2C Midshipmen have to do CORTRAMID, and rising 1C have to do Summer Cruise to Commission. How would they work NSI and CORTRAMID together in the same summer, students would basically have no time off. Last year funding for CORTRAMID was very limited. The guidelines in NROTC say only the Summer Cruise MUST be done to Commission, correct?

Ok that makes sense. I thought I read somewhere that not all Scholarship recipients got to go last year. It sounds like with the additional session they are making sure there is room for all of the recipients. Thanks for the clarification.

The only scholarship recipients that I'm aware of skipping NSI last year were SMC attendees.... but they don't review all the records with me so....

Sorry @kinnem -I should have clarified -
My son will be attending The Citadel, so that is what I also recall.

i believe i read that starting this NSI session even the SMC 4C mids will be required to attend. which is likely why there are 3 sessions versus 2.

I can confirm that scholarship recipients attending SMC were excused from NSI last year. My DS is on Marine Option scholarship at an SMC (current freshman). However, they have revisited that decision and are now making all those excused last summer attend NSI this summer as 3rd Class Midshipmen as well as attend CORTRAMID. So busy upcoming summer for some of these rising 3rd Mids.

Does anyone have any word if the same provisions apply to College Program Midshipmen? A friend of our DS who is a 2C right now, said last year she was not allowed to attend CORTRAMID due to funding issues, and has not attended NSI, only Scholarship Midshipmen (and even then not all of them) were able to attend. She told our son funding was an issue and that some Midshipmen, (even scholarship) did not attend. Has the funding issue been resolved? Or will another "last minute" cancellation occur?

I was not aware of any funding issues with CORTRAMID. Is your son's friend referring to Sea Trials? Sea Trials had funding issues and many sessions were cancelled last summer.

She told him that she hoped to go to "Summer Training" last summer, (which for Midshipmen entering Junior Year is supposed to be CORTRAMID AND Sea Trials), but that many orders were cancelled at the last minute, both East Coast and West Coast. She was a 3C last year and should have done CORTRAMID and Sea Trials and was able to do neither, and this year should do LANTRAMID (which I think may equate to Summer Cruise, but maybe is Sea Trials for 2C). Our son thought "Sea Trials" was like advanced NSI and didn't effect CORTRAMID? I am thinking it was possibly do to her being like our son, a "College Programmer" and because she is not scholarship (but Advanced Standing) possibly that had an effect? The Command at their school told them Midshipmen only NEED the Summer Cruise between junior and senior years to commission. Seems like a real gap in training for scholarship v non-scholarship Midshipmen in NROTC?

Summer Cruise and Summer Training seem to be synonymous. Before NSI and Sea Trials were introduced, this is what the summer training guidelines looked like:
Only midshipmen on scholarship or Advanced Standing participated in Summer Cruises.
- The only cruise that was required was the 1/c cruise, between junior and senior year.
- The 3/c cruise (between freshman and sophomore year) was CORTRAMID.
- The 2/c cruise (between sophomore year and junior year) was shadowing an enlisted person to learn about the life and roles of enlisted personnel.
- The 1/c cruise is shadowing a junior officer, generally in the community that mid is interested in joining to learn about their role.
- If a mid picked up a 3 year scholarship as a freshman (or reapplied for and received the 4 year scholarship) or did not attend CORTRAMID the previous year, they would go to CORTRAMID as rising 2/c. This would generally be instead of the 2/c cruise shadowing an enlisted sailor, but I'm sure there were cases where a mid was able to do both.

I've not heard of any funding issues for CORTRAMID or any reports of a scholarship mid not being able to participate due to funding.

Sea Trials started on a limited basis two years ago. There was talk last year that it was being made mandatory for 2/c mids, but then most sessions were cancelled, apparently due to funding, so I'm not sure what the future looks like for that program.

NSI also started two years ago on a limited basis, with select units participating. Last year it was expanded to be mandatory for all scholarship mids, except those attending SMCs. Some college programmers were also able to attend NSI, but it was not required. Now rumor seems to be that SMC mids will be required to attend NSI and there is rumor that all current 4/c who did not attend NSI last summer will have to attend NSI this summer. As far as I know this is just rumor and I have not seen anything from an official source. I also do not know if that will be in addition to CORTRAMID for mids on scholarship or instead of. Those affected will be told the plan, although the notice may be short.

Not sure if it means anything, but NSI and Sea Trials were programs started when RADM Bernacchi was in command of NSTC. He moved on last year and was replaced by RADM Sands. It seems possible that he wanted to emphasize different training programs.
