This may seem like a random question, but is it possible to walk-on to West Point's football team. I'm currently a junior and get a good amount of playing time, but don't think I would be good enough to be recruited. I know that West Point requires all students to participate in some sort of sport, and I was wondering if it would be possible for me to walk-on to the NCAA football team instead of playing in-house football. Thank you for your help! Go ARMY Beat NAVY!

yes it is possible...son's roommate was a walk on. Give it a go!:thumb:

does anyone know the process for walk-ons? basically how do you try out?

During Beast there will be mass athletics were all the major sports show up and you practice with them. They pay special attention to the recruits but will also take a look at anyone else that shows up.

There is also sprint football, I don't know if that interests you.

How do they recruit you for football (there's no questionnaire for NCAA football, just sprint ball)? I'm guessing you contact the proper coach and display interest, etc., but then what (what is the process/order of events/what happens)?

Yes I am aware of sprint football but unclear of the weight standards and stuff like that.

The weight limit for sprint football is 172.

You may still try out and make the team if you weigh over. Many of the guys who tried out this year were 180-200. They cut weigh for weigh ins on tuesday and bulk up trying to gain as much as possible by the game a few days later.

Sprint football is a quicker paced version of football. It is by no means a "JV team" as some people think and is also a corps squad sport.

....bump...

Many cadets send emails to the coaches introducing themselves and expressing an interest in the particular sport. Sometimes you receive a mailing or phone call afterwards. Why don't you try that? Or, you could have your HS athletic director contact them on your behalf.

Should I wait until I have more years under my belt before asking since they'll probably want stats, video, etc.?

I am not sure what the NCAA rules are for football contacts...it would not hurt to send an email to the coach to introduce yourself, etc. He is allowed to answer an email that you initiate, I am pretty sure. You can look all this up on the NCAA website to verify. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Just tell him who you are and that you are a junior, etc, and that your hope is to attend West Point and you'd like to discuss the possibility of playing football. It's ok to do this, really. That is how my son initiated contact for his sport. If you are not comfortable with this, have your AD do it.

I know it's going back a couple years but my classmate Brad Black played intramural football as a Plebe and walked on and had an outstanding carrer as a varsity football palyer. Yes, it's possible!

I'm thinking about not doing football anymore my junior and senior years because I'm not even getting any playing time on JV and no longer enjoy it.:frown: Will quitting like this be detrimental to my application because it implies lack of commitment or something?
