Great game today with MMA winning in 2 OT's. I watched it on line and it looked like a packed house. Congrats to the Mariners from a CGA fan. Good job. Both teams did their school's proud. :thumb:

We were there. Great game 33-27 in the rain, double overtime. Fine performance by both teams.

Yes it was a great game. Really enjoyed watching it on the internet. How come Luigi hasn't posted something yet?

GO Kings Point - Way to go.

Last seen!

Luigi was last spotted lobbying the sec. of trans to change the secretary's cup from football to volleyball.

Luigi's cool

give him time, he will pop on and congratulate the Mariners. He's a good sport and helps make it a fun rivalry for us parents and fans.
I felt bad for the CGA kicker (but not so bad that I was pulling for him to make those kicks :) )

Looking forward to next year's game in New London.

What a game!!!

Wow......that one is going to be talked about for a long time. Very well done Mariners! Congrats!!!! :thumb:

Great game, great win for KP. What a way to entertain the fans on Parent's Weekend!

Coach Bill George has yet to win a game in NY in his career against any team. Perhaps next year when we get to play in CT?

Thanks for the words, KP2sons. I have been staying away due to some of more "venomous" personal messages and open forum comments coming from certain overly aggressive KP parents, mids, girlfriends, etc. They don't seem to get it that we all are on the same side, that the rivalry is good natured, it's not Ohio State-Michigan or some other game where hatred rules the day. They haven't been around long enough to realize that (outside of the KP parents and alums themselves) there probably isn't a bigger KP supporter than I.

Bears need to get the Secretaries' Cup back in New London soon, the resting place on the mantle is beginning to gather dust.

Luigi - you are an officer and a gentleman...

Great words and thoughts - I watched on the internet and I was truly worried our Mariniers were going to be overcome by group of resurgent Bears late in the 4th...

I do take minor exception to one part of your post re:

..., it's not Ohio State-Michigan or some other game where hatred rules the day....

At my past employer there were many Michigan and Ohio State grads who were rabid supporters of their programs - I found them to also be friendly rivals - like KP - Coast Guard or like Army - Navy.

I did find the Facebook Status Messages of several of my fellow KP Alums who are still active duty CG in response to Admiral Allen's Facebook Status a little jocular though...

I sure hope the tradition continues, I've heard rumours that because of USCGA's change of conference and scheduling issues there is some talk of abandoning the game. Given yesterday's turnout and the tradition its become I sure hope not. Watching oin the internet was pretty cool.

I also suspect the Kings Point - Fort Schylur rivalry to quickly return to a close second and almost to the status it had 30 years ago. Anyway now with the KP-CGA rivalry strong, as well as the Schyler - Mass Maritime rivalry strong; it's also pretty certain that at both schools the KP-Schyler rivalry will be second in the hearts of their student bodies. After watching KP vs Gallaudet last week and on the streaming video feed yesterday, I wished I had made the trek up to NY to see the game in person.

On to the next sport we will battle at....

Luigi... sorry you couldn't be at the game.
It was definitely an impassioned struggle on the field...

Your CGA quarterback had quite a nasty habit of drilling the ball into open areas of coverage... and the distasteful audiacity of completing deep passes.... in particular one for 50 yards:( And the CGA wide receivers with superglue on their hands running down the sidelines and towards the end zone, catching passes. MOST disrespectful. !!!

To be fair, however, KP also completed a number of passes to CGA receivers (apparently a combination of either great coverage/telegraphed passes/or both).

But the Mariners gutted it out, and never gave up ... especially when they were down early. I enjoyed watching the pushups after each score. I was pretty far away from the KP plebes, but noted a few CGA kids (plebes?) doing one-armed pushups! :) That worked in the low numbers/teens.. I think they switched to regular once the score passed into the twenties.

The day for me was summed up on a CGA drive late in the 4th quarter. 3rd down, shortish yards to go. I looked behind me. One lady was covering her eyes with her hands. But she had her fingers spread so that she should see... afraid to look, but could not miss a second of the game. Her son was out there on the defense... And a great defensive stop it was that play too.. Sighs of relief.

All in all, just about the best struggle between these two rivals on the field, compatriots on the seas.
Kudos to both teams... although a kudo or two more for the Mariners, for showing me a win on parents weekend:)

Three comments:

1- Fairly large crowd, WAY too passive during most of the game. Took a lot to get any action out of the fans.
2- Captain Fell is great!
3- The proud father, of a newly minted plebe, sitting beside me, made the game better for me. His son was not on the field of competiton (neither was mine) but he actually ran down and di 30+ push-ups with his son. His son did not even know he was there until the set was complete. Special little moment for that family. I think the mom got a photo.

One Question:

1- How the heck did we let the Coasties take over the entire visiting sideline and about 20% of our home sideline??????

To answer your question

Generally there are more CGA Cadets at the game than Midshipmen, because we have a sizeable complement of Midshipmen out at sea.
This year was unusual because the CG game coincided with Parents Weekend.
Typically, the CGA Cadets would man the end of the main grandstand closest to the scoreboard, with their fans on the opposite side of the field (visiting sideline); the Midshipmen man the other end of the grandstand, with the KP fans in between the two regiments. This year, to accommodate the Parents Weekend crowd, the Cadets watched the game from their sideline (I have to say, this made it much easier on my ears - the constant roar between the two regiments gets pretty loud when you are in the middle of it.)
KP also added some temporary stands (the low ones to the right and left of the permanent visitors stands). These helped to provide seating for the Cadets as well as their fans.

As for the KP football crowd, I thought it was very involved in the game.

Shipmates,

This past Saturday I represented Secretary Napolitano at the Annual Secretary's Cup Game between the Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy. Kings Point hosted this year and Secretary Ray LaHood (Transportation) was represented by Acting MARAD Administrator, David Matsuda.

While we compete furiously on the field of play our graduates are shipmates in insuring our maritime transportation system is safe, secure, effective, and efficient. In fact, last year a record number of Kings Point graduates became Coast Guard officers or civilian employees. This year I met with a number of midshipmen seeking to join the Coast Guard upon graduation.

The game was the most competitive and hard fought in the history of the match up. Several lead changes occurred and Coast Guard drove to score the final touchdown of regulation play and sent the game into overtime with a two point conversion. After trading field goals on the first overtime possession, Kings Point prevailed in the second overtime. Final score 33-27.

In other action, Kings Point won the soccer game played earlier but the Coast Guard women edged Kings Point in Volleyball. At halftime RADM Scott Burhoe, Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, accepted the 2008-2009 Superintendent's Cup for Coast Guard. This goes to the school that wins the overall competition for the entire year across all sports between the schools.

Next year Coast Guard will host and we look forward to a hard fought battle with a better outcome.

Thanks for sharing that, Luigi

Great fun all around.

One thing - at halftime, they announced that the competition this year ended in a tie - 6-1/2 points each. First time that has happened, apparently.

So - they said the cup is being shared this year.

You have any better info than that?

Thanks.

The Cup is not being shared. The announcer at Capt Tombs Field was making a wish.

To "win" The Cup, you must "win" The Cup. In the result of a tie, the school that previously held The Cup retains it, as they didn't lose it and the other school didn't win it.

The Bears, who have never lost the trophy, retain it with the tie. :thumb:

That makes sense to me. When I heard the announcer say the Cup was being presented to both it seemed a bit fishy. Keep it shiny for us, KP will be taking it home on the bus from New London next year. :)
