Hello,

I am working on my personal statement right now but I am faced with the fact that I am not participating in many STEM-based activities at the moment. I have done things in my past like lego robotics and participating in science fairs - no awards won from either of those though. My dad also does many engineering projects that I have helped with. I have assisted in building a deck and staircase. I'm not sure if those really count as engineering but I thought it might help to include those.

I am planning to include that I will be taking 2 science classes(one IB), 2 engineering classes, and an accelerated math class. I hope that they will see that even though I have not worked with stem too much in the past that I still find it interesting and I plan on making a career from it.

Are there any every-day things I may be doing that involve STEM which I may not realize? I do not have a strong answer to the question asking about what STEM-related activities I participate in/participated in.

Here is the prompt and what I have written so far:

  • Why are you interested in attending USNA Summer STEM?
  • Have you been involved in any STEM-related activities, groups, or conferences?
  • Is there anything else you want to tell us about yourself?

There are thousands of career options where I could dress up in my white collar shirt and sit at the office all day, but where's the excitement in that? STEM includes very intriguing subjects in which I love using would love to continue using for the rest of my life. My name is Bennett Mason, a sophomore at Sunset High School in Portland, Oregon, and I hold great interest in the United States Naval Academy, specifically the summer STEM program being offered this summer.
I take pride in my life and see a great future ahead as an officer in the United States Navy. STEM has been a part of my life since elementary school whether it was participating in lego robotics or helping my father with engineering projects. I am looking forward to my junior year of high school where I will be participating in two science classes, two engineering courses, and a high-level math class. Attending USNA’s summer STEM program would be a huge step towards my future and I am interested in attending to progress my knowledge and to have greater exposure to the Naval Academy.

Also, any feedback on my personal statement would be great!!!!

Thanks,
Bennett611

First leading sentence, imo, should be replaced with something more uplifting. Try being more specific of what engineering activities/science fair things you did and what you got out from it and learned. Did this influence others in any way?

Hey,
I am a rising sophomore and was accepted on March 5th for the second session of USNASS. From what I understand, the important thing on the applications is not necessarily what you have done (while that is important) but what you think you could contribute/what you could learn from such an experience. I initially had a similar line in my statement about being an aspiring officer but removed them because by stating my interest in the Acadamy I felt that this was a given and used the 100 characters elsewhere in my statement. I agree with Zero, never post your personal info on the forum. The people here are great but it's still the internet. I also talked about my interest in STEM-related topics from a young age and I guess it worked. I can PM you my full statement if you like. Best of luck!
