I know many schools are closing international campuses (NYU notably) and others telling students that school won't resume after spring break (Harvard notably). I'm wondering if USNA has released a statement about it and if it will impact us going to I-Day or something? The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed in my county and I'm worried if I were somehow exposed that it would medically DQ me (even though I've already accepted my appointment). I'm definitely worrying a little much in my specific case, but I'm curious if USNA has said anything about what they'll do going forward

Like many institutions and the military at large, USNA will be proceeding on a day-to-day basis, doing operational risk analysis and balancing mission vs. risk, must-do things vs. nice-to-do things. The health of the Brigade and the mission of producing Navy and Marine officers will trump everything else, and decisions will be made accordingly. They will preserve I-Day, or adjust as needed, or cancel. There is no way to predict this far in advance, but guaranteed these discussions are ongoing. There will be coordination with Big Navy, DOD and other service academy counterparts.

I Day with families, activities and ceremonies has not been around forever. Like a wedding, the only thing that is required is the oath-taking, with some check-in activities. My DH took the train from Philly to Baltimore and a taxi to Gate 1. No parents, no events. Checked in at Halsey Field House, went through the various checkpoints, took the oath. Took the train home to Philly at Christmas, as there was no Thanksgiving break, much less Plebe Parents Weekend. Different style of parenting and interaction between USNA and families back then.

Stay flexible.

I've been waiting forever for someone of the Capt's experience and reputation to post this! AMEN!
Reading the social media blogs coming out of USNA today you would think the world is going to end because they might not be able attend Herndon and God knows what. There are days when I wonder if it's getting more LIKE College than NOT.

Social media blogs of parents or mids?

Social media blogs of parents or mids?

There are dozens of social media sites on Facebook, Snapshot etc. exclusively for MID parents in dozens of categories e.g. by class, by partenthood, by service selction, by company et.al.

USNA will keep everyone updated as things unfold. Things are changing hourly on this stuff. As mentioned, welcome to the military. The only thing that is constant is change. This is sort of how a deployment goes... lots of rumors, things change 100 times, and everyone is guessing! It’s how you learn to worry about what you can control. The Navy has banned families from graduations at boot camp. They are figuring out how to keep the force healthy and readiness at a high level. USNA will look at all aspects and get guidance from big Navy, local authorities and their medical staff. It will all workout with either your parents there or not. Honestly only half my class had family at I Day. As mentioned, the mass parental involvement and knowledge of everything is a relatively new thing.

I think people are just curious and concerned and are trying to possibly change their plans and reservations if necessary. I have a child in college that has been closed for the semester and another child in high school that will close on Thursday for the semester or at least through March. I have been wondering how Navy would handle this situation as they are in a unique situation. I have two mids home (one is DD's roommate) for spring break for this week. Not really thrilled about putting them on flights.

So it isn’t necessarily getting more like college for the mids. And that is all that matters.

I read the Facebook stuff. I laugh at that stuff.

I have two kids returning home until further notice.
Better go grocery shopping.

Oh man the grocery bill. Are the schools refunding some of the money for room and board who send kids home for the semester?

USNA is sort of in a unique situation... Mids sort of live isolated, they can shut down the campus if needed to limit people there, relatively healthy and low risk population. They could even restrict liberty if needed. Be interesting to see how this progresses over the coming weeks.

I would almost think they would want the mids there and restrict movement off or visitors on until it is over. Isolate them.

And keep your eyes on the mids coming from known areas. Be ready to quarantine them somewhere on the yard if they have it.

The interesting thing in all this, is the TIMING. Spring break. That increases the reach of all of this infinitely! For all schools, everywhere. Combine that outreach and risk of exposure with the fact that this is highly contagious from day 1 of infection, along with the fact that symptoms don’t present until day 5, and it’s a recipe for transmittal.

It’s not IF the brigade will get it. Its WHEN. IMO. Fortunately our mids are young and healthy. Very low risk for complications. More worrisome for admin and staff.

No need to worry or panic. Turn off the news, live your life. Use best health practices. Stay home if sick. I think I counted almost 60 EPIDEMIC HEALTH CRISIS’ in my lifetim that I have survived. And none by my own doing. Also the end of the times Y2K. It will be ok.....

Really no wondering about it.. times have changed. On the other hand , there hasn't been a class alive that didn't think they had the last Plebe Year.

Saw a Facebook post last night where some Alum was demanding that USNA announce their plans for Coronavirus. The poster was claiming the Administration had its head in the sand and was ignoring the threat, because it hadn't announced its plan publicly. I am certainly not in the loop at USNA, but I had to laugh -- I was in the Navy long enough to know that the Navy knows how to plan ahead and I suspect the Naval Academy had an infectious disease plan in place when Corona was just a cheap Mexican beer. No plan survives the first contact with the enemy-- but I am sure that the Administration is monitoring and adapting the plan as the threat develops.

I read that post/thread as well and chalked it up as more "HARRUMPHING" from some folks who have not been closely attached to USNA in many years and seem to go off on crusades about pretty minor on a fairly regular basis.

The question about refunding room and board came up in my class today. We are off next week for spring break and the University just announced that we will go to "distance learning" at the end of spring break. I discussed this with my class today with my current expectations of what we will do for the rest of the semester in my class. Clearly the school has not disseminated much info to the students thus far and they wanted me to give them answers for things beyond my class. As a good leader, I did not shy away but instead gave my best estimate but prefaced(and closed) with the proviso that it was my OPINION. My guess is that unused meals on the meal plan will eventually be refunded as the costs to pay the contractor will not be incurred. On the other hand, the rooms cost is more likely to NOT be refunded as those costs don't tend to drop much in the absence of the student.

As for USNA, I can tell you that in the winter of my First Class Year, we had an epidemic of what was called the "Russian Flu" which as I recall, ended up knocking out over half of the brigade. Classes were cancelled and liquid meals were delivered to each company area as there were too many sick mids to handle it at the Hospital. I think I remember them closing the yard and cancelling athletic contests but Graduation week was not affected.

Exactly. Continuity of operations, contingency plans, etc. are in place at every agency and organization. Another adage of war is, the first information is usually incorrect. There’s also a difference in inaccurate information and misinformation which is being peddled by some. Smart people will do smart things and hopefully COVID-19 will burn out soon.

i have a feeling my sons visit to the USNA campus later this month will not be allowed. this was the last piece of the puzzle for him to accept his appointment :(
