How long do you think public schools will be closed?

After that 8 week ban by the CDC of 50 or more gathered people, that would bring us to school being closed until early-mid May. Think school will be closed for the rest of the year?

My wife just read the governor of Kansas has closed all schools for the remainder of this school year.

The district where I teach as of now is closed until 14 April but I betcha we’ll be closed longer.

This outbreak is in the early phase and on its way up.

We are in Southern Cal, and schools are now closed until April 30. Governor just announced that he believes schools will stay closed until summer. Yikes! Asking for opinions to create discussion (not panic): What do you think this mean for kiddos reporting end of June? Any thoughts for how this may play out?

Might depend on the school district. Do they graduate seniors and issue diplomas? Do they restart schools and have folks make up missed time for an extended period? Can the academies adjust their plebe summer programs to accommodate the bumps in the road? Only time will tell.

We are also in Socal (LA County) and saw the news. I know its so early to tell but I wonder if Plebe summer dates will be pushed back.

So Cal here too. So far we’re only out til 4/13. School is providing update on 3/27. Absolutely sick about senior hear and missing the learning, AP testing, moving on after graduation.

Update to my comment above on the closing of schools in Kansas. An article today stated the buildings will remain closed the remainder of the year but online instruction will continue.

Continuing online was my district’s plan but the situation accelerated so fast that we closed two days before the faculty and students were scheduled to go in and get guidance on how to proceed.

Surely in 2020 we have the vision needed to finish the academic year online so seniors can graduate and I can get my two months of summer.

My university had already put us on remote instruction starting next week after our regular spring break this week.
Yesterday, our University President announced that we would remain in remote instruction through the rest of the semester.
He also announced that our "in person Commencement" must be transitioned to a virtual environment and that they are
figuring out the details at this time.

My wife and I (both of us teach there) just talked about our strategy going forward and we have a rough idea of how we're going
to proceed on our classes. I'll probably do one online (synchronus) session with the rest of the semester asynchronus sessions/assignments.

Our district's communication so far has been a formal "wait."

I think that the real speed bump issue will be/is that 100% of the students do not have the access/ability to continue a semester virtually...so seems like that cannot be a blanket solution for K -12 (unlike college). If they choose to delay the semester the number of weeks the semester was paused, I have to believe they will give students with early check-ins a modified option. 🙏

I think flexibility really needs to be king... as much as possible and especially for our seniors!

Would love to hear the details of a virtual commencement as they become available, so please share as you are able. Grateful for the technology that allows us to keep moving forward!

In AZ the governor has us closed until at least 27 March. Our District is communicating daily any updates that they have, both with staff and the community. We are rural and access to internet and computers for all kids is sketchy at best. Not sure how we will proceed. Legislature has a back up plan in place to close for remainder of school year and have packets delivered by bus drivers, online access where possible, waiver for mandatory state testing slated to begin in April and waiver of absence policy/instructional time. Ready to go meals are being handed out during a curb side pick up 2 hours a day.

Not sure what that would look like in terms of graduation which is scheduled for 22 May, or their senior trip to Disneyland scheduled the prior week.

I miss my students, my son misses his teachers. I know this is all being done to limit exposure and illness, death for those at risk. I am selfishly sad about the senior year items my kiddo and his peers are not getting.

As already noted by many above, it depends. For universities, many have sent undergraduate students home for the semester and told not to come back e.g. MIT while schools such as Univ. of Pennsylvania have already announced commencement has been cancelled.

We will be lucky if they start in the fall semester, which in Florida public schools is early August. Until then, on-line classes

I teach in Virginia. Our governor closed all buildings for the remainder of the academic year. Just got an email from my administrator. We are doing a department virtual meeting tomorrow to find out how we will proceed online. Meanwhile all sports and other activities are cancelled. Graduation-who knows!?!

Edit: just got another email cancelling the prom.

dang, poor kiddos and teachers. Not to mention the parents who now are homeschooling with no prep. We in AZ are still slated to be closed through Easter weekend. We met by dept. yesterday to coordinate and plan lessons moving forward. Luckily, we are a small school so we were able to meet and still not violate the 10 person gathering rules. It did feel strange not to give hugs to my coworkers and to sit solo at tables in the library. Google classroom sure will come in handy, glad we did that last year for Professional Development. Prom, senior trip and graduation all 'pending' and tbd. Athletics done for season at this point.
