Ever wonder what the cockpit looks like?

I don't want to "stir the airdale pot" at all, but I definitely appreciate the beautiful C-17.

As a little experiment, take a look at the cockpit picture for the F-111 (the plane I first flew). Look a little "busy" to you?

Now, take a look at the Viper's cockpit (they didn't have my manly F-15E to show you, so I had to settle for the "moped") Looking a little less "cluttered"?

NOW, take a look at the F-35's cockpit. Hey! Where did all the buttons go? And where is the freakin' HUD? I thought the same thing the first time I stepped into the Lightning II's simulator. Amazing how technology has changed.

But don't get me started on the -35's throttle and stick. THAT is where all the buttons went! Keep playing your X-box's kids. That there is training for the future! :thumb:

Ahh..HOTAS...we've had that in the Eagle for decades: "Playing the piccolo!"

One of the hardest things to get a handle on!!!

Thanks, Luigi, for posting that page. I forwarded the link to people I know will appreciate it, as well.

Bullet will tell you I never looked in the inside of any of his planes after the 1st time I sat in the 111. I realized it freaked me out too much to know what he had to do to get back home to us. Of course now that DS wants to fly a fighter I will continue to never look inside one

Steve, I've GOT to get you into the F-35 sim. On top of a few more buttons to play with for the HOTAS, add in voice activated commands and touch screen video displays! We're going form playing the piccolo to leading the whole dang orchestra!

Just remember: "I got to think in Russian!"

Hmm....think in Russian...Russian...

...hmm...been a LOT of years since I last did anything in Russian....

 AHH!!! :yay:

"Предупреждение! Вражеский самолет налево! Ракеты огня!"

Yep, that works!!!

Actually though...the idea of touch screens (okay, at 9G, that's NOT high on my fun list) and voice commands (I WANT THAT SOFTWARE ROYALTY CHECK!) does have a LOT of "oh WOW!!!" factor!!

Warning! Enemy aircraft left face! Rockets of the fire

Wow, you pilot people are really smart! I had to use a translator to figure that out.....:shake:
Hmm...well, it was meant to be: "Warning! Enemy aircraft left! Fire missiles!"

But then again, I've not attempted to speak Russian in about 17 years and my memory and dictionary are...not the best anymore!

Anglicized: "Pazhaloosta...ahdeen pivo!"

Very good link. Thanks Luigi.

The most interesting things about all the varying cockpits is ........just how similar and basic the fundamental control panels really are. The very heart of all those panels are the same. The instruments that all pilots are looking at the vast majority of the time.....are the same.

That a good thing!!!

Hm...I wonder how the computer will do with voice commands while the pilot is G-straining...?

Personally, I'm kind of a fan of buttons. They are very definite. Touch screens have that accuracy/"did I really activate it" issue.

Steve it has always had some type of voice activation, at least for decades now, if you haven't heard it, than you are one good pilot...our friend had to buy 4 bottles of weed because Betty spoke 4 times on one flight...OVER G :shake: Of course she never heard you tell her to shut up! I am laughing here thinking of Onstar, and how you have to repeat yourself multiple times...you said XXXX is that right?:confused1:
