Hi, I am a junior in highschool looking to be a part of the class of 2015.
I would just like some insight on my ec's, sports, and leadership.

National Junior Honor Society - Since 7th grade
Gifted Program - http://www.pmsd.org/Default.aspx?tabid=716
Mock Trial - 9th grade
Peer Tutor - 10th grade, and continuing
Ski Club - 4 years
Track and Field - 9th, 10th grade and continuing, will be in leadership committee this season, guaranteed letter as a senior
Leo Club - Community service, joined this year, will be Vice or Pres*
Student Citizen Organization - Joined this year
National Honor Society - Since 10th grade

Well I will definitely try for an office in NHS, and SCO.
I'm interested in Boy's State, but how can I apply?
My academics are solid. :thumb:

Would Track be enough, and how about my leadership?

I would try out for an office in all your favorite activities to have a better chance of getting at least one position. Try for them this year if its not too late, and if it is too late then work hard and have the best attitude of any kid there so you might be noticed for next year.

Be helpful to the adult sponsors who usually have some say in who gets to be officer, but most important do all this from your heart, NOT to suck up.

Go above and beyond, offer to stay after and clean up, things like that. My mom use to be a Girl Scout leader and she said she always noticed the one or two kids who were actually grateful and helpful because most kids aren't. I took her advice and I have lots of leadership positions and I keep putting my heart and energy in everyone of them.

I think when you do things sincerely and care about others (even those irritating kids and no so fun sponors!) you create more opportunites for yourself than you ever imagined!

Do a web search for Boy's State, they have a web site.

"The recommended method is for the school to recommend a list of eligible candidates to the local American Legion post. The post would then conduct interviews and selects their representative(s) to the program." (http://www.legion.org/programs/youthprograms/boystate)

Have yet to find out where applications are available (or if they are yet), but your best option would be to contact your local American Legion post and display interest in Boy's State and ask for more info and also speak with your guidance counselor for more info.

Thank you all for your responses. Today I was nominated for President and Vice President of Leo Club, and I have one week to prepare my speech. Officers of Leo Club have an additional meeting each week, so this would prevent me from holding office in Green Club or maybe SCO, because they both meet on that day and even if I did show up, I'll be late, not good for an officer.
My school has a leadership committee of about 10 members that run track and field, we do not have a captain and our track team has 100 members. Would this be considered a captain-ship in West Point's eyes?

My leadership would then consist of Pres or VP of Leo Club, Track Captain (?), Peer Tutor, Gifted Program, maybe NHS office, and Boy's State (if accepted).

Also, my school gives out Varsity Letters to Seniors of Track even if they never had the required points. I'm not sure I am skilled enough to get a letter this year as a junior, but getting one next year would be too late. Would it be possible to put Varsity Letter on my application before I actually had received it?

If your school says you're a captain, then you are. Ask them.

Yes. If you are certain that you will be Varsity your senior year, you can put that on your application. I would wait to enter it until the actual portal application comes online in August of your senior year, however.

Stop worrying about "checking the blocks" with West Point admissions and do activities because you ENJOY them, not because you think they will look good on an application for USMA or elsewhere. Let me do MY job of assessing each file case-by-case. Your Activities Report will be verified by a school official, so if they are willing to sign off on the fact that you WILL BE a varsity letter-winner or varsity team captain for an upcoming season (by talking to your coach or whatever) then that's good enough for us. I wouldn't put it on the candidate questionnaire unless you are CERTAIN that it will be verified by the school official.

Boys/Girls state is an outstanding program. I hear the term "best week of my life" associated with it frequently. West Point knows that (just like with Eagle Scouts or Student Body presidents, etc) that Boys/Girls State participants typically make good cadets and good officers... we have over 70 years of data to back that up. You can probably draw your own conclusions about Boys/Girls State's impact on your file based on that assessment.
