Haven't given up on the class of 24 yet, but wondering if anyone had experience doing CG Reserves or Auxiliary during their second choice schooling? My heart's set on the Long Blue Line, but I've locked down solid plan Bs at civilian colleges.

My DS is in the Auxiliary at TAMUG

My DD joined the Auxiliary while at TAMUG. She got the hoped-for call last week as a re-app. Best of luck!

My son was accepted at Mass Maritime... still praying he gets into USCGA! but if USCGA is a 'no', would it make any sense for him to do a year there, then reapply?

Good for your DS! Is he reapplying? Or staying at Galveston?
He did reapply but unsuccessfully... his freshman grades were rough leading to a realization he was in the wrong major. He is now in Marine Transportation and thriving. He will work towards OCS or MARGRAD upon graduation.

Good luck to you.

can you afford 4 years at MA Maritime? In case reapplication doesn’t work out?

Have you considered self prep at Marion or Georgia Military?
I have, but I was accepted to a really good program with UF and was advised by officers with CGA Admissions that my academics and "military" (military academy middle school and high school JROTC) record didn't warrant needing additional help at a prep program unless it was through Scholars.

Compared to his other "plan B" schools, WPI and Catholic U, Mass Maritime is a bargain, plus they gave a decent scholarship... I guess in my mind Mass Maritime might be quasi-coast guard, and if he re-applies to USCGA, maybe it would look better trying to transfer in with some military-ish experience.

it is a maritime academy.. research MARGRAD as an option from there

A lot of sense. My DD was a successful reapplicant after spending a year at TAMUG (aka Texas A&M Maritime Academy). She joined a NROTC unit as a walk-on and took as close a class schedule to that of a swab/plebe as she could. She took advantage of the year to improve her PFT score and seek out volunteer and leadership opportunities.

I know that many on here may disagree with me but, perhaps it is a better option to stay at MMA, graduate with the3rd Mates License and decide where he wants to go from there. He can go MARGRAD and serve as a USCG officer, or at that point, he may find that the high dollar civilian opportunities offered to a 3rd Mate in the shipping industry look pretty darn amazing. :) Personally, I think the Maritime Academies are a hidden gem that often get overlooked because so many are laser focused on the SA's. Ultimately, Having the experience of a 3rd Mate who has passed the USCG license exam will go a LONG WAY if he decides to go Margrad. After traveling the world 3 times on a huge training vessel for months at a time, he won't be perplexed by a cutter. It's an amazing experience. My DD was recruited by MMA and we went to spend some time there and at SUNY. I thought MMA was incredible. They were, by far, the most organized of all the college visitation programs she attended - CGA included. I tried to get her to consider MMA as her first choice but she kept steady in her desire to attend CGA. Just a diff perspective....

Thanks for the encouragement... I think its a great Plan B, and he really did like it there... was planning on shadowing a student there on April 4, but we all know how that's turning out, thank you virus! We are of course still going to keep everythign crossed for USCGA, but its looking/feeling pretty bleak right about now. Happy to have confirmation that MMA is a solid choice.

DS applied and had nominations to USNA and USMA two years in a row. Got the TWE each year. Graduated Mass Maritime with commission USNR Ensign on board USS Constitution. He had a great four years and a job right after graduation. Has served merchant marine all over the world and the last two on Sealift Command ships. They are a hidden gem that do not get the exposure they deserve. Now LT USNR.
