DS was recently waitlisted at a very competitive engineering school for mechanical engineering. He has NROTC and was wondering whether to reach out to the unit and if it can help with admittance to the school. If anyone has experience with this any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Well, it can't hurt. They may not be able to help but nothing ventured, nothing gained. At some schools the unit can have some sway, at others none at all. All depends on the school.

Definitely reach out to the school. Like @kinnem said, it really depends on the school, but for me I believed it put the icing on the cake for my application. I later reached out to the admissions officer who admitted me, and he said having an ROTC scholarship made me stand apart from other applicants and gave him a different perspective on my goals (I got into some top 5 schools in the end, some of which had a pull and others didn't).

I like the advice of both @kinnem and @bronze267. Reach out to both the school and the NROTC unit.

Question - had DS application been submitted before receipt of the NROTC scholarship? Some schools only accept new information (past application deadline) if it is 'new and compelling'. Receiving the national NROTC scholarship certainly meets that criteria.

I did this for a few schools for engineering as well and I won a 4 yr Army scholarship. I dont know how well it impacted my decision but I got my decisions earlier than the release date and got accepted so it worked out in my favor, I would recommend it.

Did you reach out to admissions or the ROTC unit

I would recommend reaching out to the unit. In the case of my DS, I am almost certain it had an impact in admissions to at least one of his schools.

For me, the AFROTC staff at one college contacted me letting me know they would work with admissions to ensure an acceptance provided I intended to go there if so.

Did you reach out first? My DD applied last week to a college ( had a change of heart about the college she was accepted to ) and was awarded an AFROTC this week. Should she reach out to admissions about this news or to the ROTC command

For that college I had not made contact with them yet. For my primary choice however I have made contact with questions about the unit. Doesn’t hurt to email / call then if you have any questions!

I reached out to the ROTC Unit and asked them to speak to admissions on my behalf and they did. On the other hand, I tried admissions first but that did not work out well and they pretty much told me that it doesn't mean anything that I got the scholarship, so I contacted the unit and asked them to speak to admissions and I got a much better response. From my experience, it really helps having the unit contact admissions and explain it to them and the benefits that the school would get rather than me contacting admissions directly.

I had the exact same situation. Called admissions and they said it wouldn’t help. Calling the unit is the way to go.
