Just starting this thread for those of us/DS/DD who had MMI as their plan B. USCGA was DS's first and only choice, but we had plans B, C, D in place in case. He's looking forward to it, maybe not the heat & humidity though. Cali kid here.

I've been spoiled rotten with the weather in Cali, and can only imagine the humidity but I'm in the same boat as ur DS!

Thoughts on setting up a self prep MMI Facebook page?

We are headed to MMI now for USCGA Self Prep! A lot of questions on MMI since we were so focused on Plan A. I'll check out the FB page thats existing but i'm all in for a self prep MMI Facebook page! My DS is on a cross-country scholarship there so he needs to self-prep for the HEAT and HUMIDITY! Ohio kid here, so any weather is better than Ohio weather!

The MMI Parent Page includes a lot of self prep parents for this year's class. Its a great group of folks. Lots of experiences to share!

Hi all! There is a Snapchat group chat being made for those attending MMI. I was rejected from CGA and will be attending MMI's SAP program for the Coast Guard this fall. I saw others did it last year and figured it would be a great idea, so if you or your DD or DS are attending MMI and want to be added to it, feel free to let me know.

How many SAP self-preppers are there for the USCGA on average? Anyone have this information?

MMI just announced (on their FB page) 59 appointments for the 5 service academies earned thus far for the semester with more to come...
The question for all the self-preppers should be "what is the apoointment rate for self-preppers?" The number and rate of appointments for sponsored prep kids is completely immaterial to your situation.

The video from today or yesterday stated 10 self preps, and from the two parents that replied, there's either 20 or 23 self preps in the program this year.

What it doesn't include, and where it get's tricky, is how you perceive a student with USCGA #1, USNA #2, and USAFA #3 who was self prep and received an appointment to school choice #2 and/or #3, but not school choice #1. In this example, was it a failure? Did the year of prep not work for them? Statistically it would show as a miss if you are simply looking at - student wanted USCGA, but did not receive an appointment to USCGA.

It also listed 1 student who received an appointment after 3 tries, and several who had done 2yrs at the school prior to receiving an appointment.

Certainly not a golden ticket via the self prep route, and why many suggest going to a 4yr program and put the prep schedule together on your own. Each student has to decide the best fit for them academically, physically, mentally, geographically, and financially.

Its not just what "many" suggest - its what CGA and all the other academies recommend. I think you will be hard pressed to find official numbers for self-preppers and their success rate overall, much less at their academy of choice. The loose numbers above show a success rate of approximately 40% - for the other 60%, good luck transferring those credits from what amounts to an Alabama community college to any reputable 4 year institution

Are you saying MMI isn't reputable? Sure seems like a derogatory comment about an "Alabama community college."

Exactly. Doesn't fit with what the Coast Guard Admissions team said to us during a 1-1 in the fall. They said Marion is actually really good for prep and encouraged that as a backup. Now how far is the student away from an academy appointment based on where they stand right now? That is a question that your DS/DD needs to make with the feedback from admissions, which is why 1 year of prep isn't enough sometimes. Either way, you can transfer your credits out, "Alabama Community College" or not.

With what admissions said, the chances increase to about 50% after a self-prep year at MMI (again depending on how well the student does). That would coincide with this years rate of about 45% getting appointments. Thanks @mamabear1302 !

I'm saying good look transferring credits from what amounts to an Alabama community college to a reputable four year institution- it's a two year institution in Alabama - is what I wrote somehow not accurate? Maybe reputable wasn't the best word - how about highly selective, because most of these kids would have gone to a highly selective college if they weren't pursuing an academy appointment

There is a developing mindset on this site that self prepping is somehow the answer for those who were rejected - which is great for the institutions offering self prep programs, but not necessarily so great for the kid who enrolls in one and doesn't earn an appointment. Now what? Parents and kids need to think about that, since most self preppers are not going to earn an appointment. If a kid who is rejected does what all the academies recommend and enrolls in a regular college and takes a first year like schedule, re-applies, and is rejected again, they don't have to worry about finding a new school and whether those credits will transfer, making new friends, etc, etc, etc.
