We just got an invite to October 16ths S.T.E.P program, but I don't think we will be able to attend. The entire family went to AIM week and did the sight seeing thing while our son did pushups (hehe). So I think we will have to pass even though we REALLY want to go. Is this going to look badly about our commitment to the CG. We live in Texas, so is it understandable why we can't make it? We just want to do everything we can to show our interest. Will this hurt my son's chances if he doesn't go?

Objee, how many out-of-staters attend S.T.E.P.? Thanks, -officer

STEP

My question is along the same line. Is getting invited to STEP any indication that they maybe interested in you? How many people does USCGA invite to the STEP.
Thanks

I just received a STEP invitation as well. A few questions: is this any indication of their interest in you, or is it sent to anyone who started an application? Also, if I were to receive an appointment to CGA (knock on wood) I would plan on majoring in government. Should I go anyway? I have not been to CGA to visit yet.

USCGA offers these opportunities to provide further information to those who may be interested or are in the process of applying. This is not something that is a "requirement." It's only to help you make a more well-rounded, educated decision and answer the question, "Is this where I belong?"

No, it will not hurt his chances.

S.T.E.P. (as are most of the Fall Visitation Programs at USCGA) is not really a program where the candidates are there to impress the Coast Guard Academy.

On the contrary, it is for the Coast Guard Academy to impress the candidates.

What is S.T.E.P.?

Science, Technology and Engineering Program (STEP). This event will give you and your family the opportunity to meet and interact with the unique Academy staff and faculty, and provide you with an in-depth look into Cadet Life, Academics, Athletics, Professional and Social Development. The Science, Technology, and Engineering Program-- or “STEP” is a unique six-hour Friday program that combines real-world academics with an Academy orientation and open house. Guests will enjoy access to cadets, faculty members, coaches, Admissions staff, and meet like-minded young men and women. The day will consist of hands-on workshops, a campus tour, lunch, and Q&A session. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate.

We will be hosting two STEP sessions this fall. The first will be on October 16, 2009 and second will be STEP for Women and will be held on November 6, 2009.

Daughter just got back from the 24 hour Cadet for a Day program, so I would think she probably wouldn't get invited to that.

Thank you very much for the info though. :thumb:

What does the 24-hour cadet for a day program entail? (What time do you arrive and what time do you leave?)

She had to be there by 11am on Thursday. She was paired up with her host. Where ever the host went, she went. She sat with her at meals, went to class, practice, evening actitivites, formations etc.. She was done at 11am on Friday. Daughter said it was a great experience. Really got a good look at academy life (the good and the bad). Solidified her decision to try to get an appointment.

My son will be doing an overnight visit as well. Did your Daughter get to have an interview with an admissions officer? Were you able to get a tour of the academy? Should we get there early to look around or interview? Any advise is helpful.
Thanks for your help!

No, there was no interview with admissions. She contacted admissions prior to and they said that the Cadet she was staying with would be filling out some type of evalaution (my word, not theirs) that would be counted as the interview. She was not given the option of an interview with a member of admissions. My daughter and her host were of somewhat different personalities (got along just fine though) so I am not quite sure how I feel about that, but that apparently is their policy. Upon arrival they do give an orientation for the parents if you chose to go. There were quite a few other perspective cadets there. We didn't because we had been through one before. I don't know if they will offer a tour to parents after that info session. I do know there was a tour after the info session we attended as part of the Academy's regular Info Session schedule (went last spring).

Obviously have your son wear comfortable shoes, business casual attire and view the whole thing as an "interview". He is "interviewing" them to see if it's the place for him and they are "interviewing" him. It appears the Cadre are relied upon a great deal for their opinions on future cadets.

BTW: Make sure he brings some PT clothes in case of sports type activity

Hope this helps
