Mid willing to answer questions

Have you ever heard of a midshipman from USMMA or any SA for that matter, transferring to USNA after their first year and starting over? Thanks In advance.

There is a alot of discusson of this topic on this Forum, and was expressly addressed during a BGO training a few years ago -- and the answer is NO. USNA will not poach students at other Service Academies (and perhaps an unwritten rule --this is reciprocol among Service Academies. You should not attend any other Service Academy expecting that you can apply and attend another later.

Thank you for that insight. When I told my current BGO I was planning to turn down my USMMA appointment in order to apply to USNA again next year... he told me that he did not encourage that. Instead, he encouraged me accepting my USMMA appointment and applying to Navy again next year if I still wanted to. I understood his reasoning but didn't think the academies would like it.

I had also read some of the past threads that indicated it would not be advisable to try this, so I was surprised when my BGO told me this. I wanted to find out definitively: Has the aforementioned "Mid willing to answer questions" heard of any "academy transfer" if you want to call it that.

Hi there - you had mentioned trying different things during sports period. What sports other than the standard ones can a plebe try out during sports period? Is rock climbing available?

While awaiting specific answers, do some reading at the primary sources below:

Navy varsity and club sports:

Navy intramural (read the hamburger menu)

Navy ECAs:

A current or recent mid can better address which activities might “count” as your ac year sport. You’ll get opportunities during PS to try out for various sports - assuming that part of the upcoming PS remains the same this year.

www.navysports.com is the website for the Naval Academy Athletic Assn (NAAA), the independent non-profit organization that manages and does most of the funding for the Div I sports program, handles NCAA business, operates sports venues and ticket sales. Good site to explore. You and family may enjoy the Navy sports app - which is sadly missing all spring sports coverage right now.

What did you do for FUN last semester and plebe year? Do you ever get to just sleep in on a Sunday?

'll be a plebe this summer, how are the validation tests?
They're difficult if your someone who doesn't understand the material well when it comes to chemistry. The English exam is just an essay on a quick reading they give you. While it's nice to validate classes, its not the end of the world if you don't. The academy wants you to succeed academically so just trust the process if you don't validate. The math exams are taken before you arrive on I day unless they've changed they're styled like online math homework. Hope this helps!

As far as I'm aware you can do all D1 sports we have available, along with those there are intramurals like soccer, flag football or something else as the rotate every semester. Over the summer you can try out for the Offshore Sailing team which is unique. As for the rock wall, it is available during the AC year during sports period, but I'm not sure about over plebe summer.

There's plenty of opportunities to have fun while at USNA. Granted your version of fun might change when you come. There are many colleges around the Annapolis area that are fun to go to. I personally have friends that go to Johns Hopkins so I go over there a lot. We're also close to DC and there is many concerts and other events that they have. Last semester I got to go to the Post Malone concert with friends from my company. If you manage your time well there is plenty of opportunities to go out and have fun and unwind from the grind even without a car (Uber becomes your best friend). As for Sundays as a plebe, you can sleep in Monday mornings because of holiday routine to allow people to go to church services during the AC year.

Also to those who were supposed to attend NASS/STEM I'm sorry that is got canceled, but don't hang your head over it. Stay motivated and do your applications!

According to DS, there are some non-traditional sports that qualify in not having to do intramural sports. He, for example, is on the ultimate frisbee team, which he really likes. They are a D3 club team and had varsity status this spring (until events overtook). They’ve had MOs on the east coast and we’re good - beat USAFA in March. Other teams have more talent but Navy out-conditions them and runs the other teams into the ground.

Hi everyone I'm a current 3/C Midshipmen (USNA '22). With the extra time of being home, I thought I would return to here to answer any questions candidates may have about academy life or the application process. Everything is fair game so ask away!
Thank you! Would you give some insight about NAPS midshipman? Any stories about NAPS graduates? So much thanks for your thoughts and i realize it is just a generalities but any insight would be appreciated.

Hey, I’m an incoming ‘24 member. I got a few questions if you don’t mind.

1) what’s the latest I-Day report time? Mine is 0900. Is this a good or bad time, considering the rumors that you might not have enough time to organize your stuff?

2) what do you do during I-day after processing? Do you organize your stuff and just wait until the Oath of Office ceremony?

3) What’s the hardest day/event in PS?

Thank you!

@kevintanaka

1) You will lose your sense of time. You can’t control when you report and how much time you get, so you learn one of your first time management lessons: optimize what you have. You will also have roommates, and teamwork is the key to success. Pray for a prior enlisted or NAPS roommate; they are great mentors for getting acclimated. You will figure it out.

2) You’ll be busy. Any waiting time will be spent in memorization and other fun stuff. If you’ve watched the videos of I-Day of the plebes going into Bancroft, they’ve been getting Marching 101 during the day.

3) Subject to your level of fitness, personality type, ability to handle stress and hot humid weather. I’ll leave this to the current and former mids to answer.

I can speak to #1, as the parent of a 0900 report time. It was a leisurely morning, although he was anxious to get going. He did wait until the later time (some go earlier and get kind of 'sucked up' in the mob of plebes...). His experience was that he was too late for lunch, and didn't get to his room in time to get it all set up. But guess what? NONE of that mattered. It all worked out. So don't concern yourself with anything other than coming in your best physical state. Honestly, if your challenge of the day isn't getting 'set up', it will be something else. One cannot prevent anything....the best response is to do what you are told, listen, help others, and do your best!!

We are all cheering for '24!! And excited for you!! We are also so very curious how USNA will accomplish this great feat, induction '24, within the parameters of this new normal we are living in. You, along with '20, are going to be part of USNA history!

This is the start of learning what you can control and not worrying about what you can’t. Yeap, you will have less time in the hall to get ‘set up’. But there are new Mids who will have 0700 report times who will get to the hall after you. Medical review can take awhile for some. It tends to be the back up during the day. Your classmates will help you. The NAPSters arrive a day early and get all their stuff. They run around I Day helping their new classmates get settled, how to fold things, how things should be set up, how to make a bed. It’s a team effort. Many don’t like to eat breakfast due to nerves. Force yourself. You will probably miss lunch. It’s not the end of the world to miss a meal. Not to mention, in reality at this point, who knows what I Day looks like this year!

@kevintanaka
I am unsure what the latest report time is. I was the 0600 report time, and was able to have all of my stuff organized in my room after just a few hours.
Throughout the day, while everyone was being processed, the detailers took people in groups to lunch. I spent the rest of the day until the swear-in just helping my roommates unpack. I believe we had everyone's stuff in my room unpacked after only a couple days.

To answer your last question. the most difficult evolution for me in Plebe Summer was standing still in the sun for several hours so that we could take the aerial drone photo in front of Bancroft's doors. I would recommend wearing your dirty/stained cover for that one.

Feel free to message me as well if you have other questions.

1. I personally had a 0600 report time and I was able to unpack and set up my room, my roommate had a late report time around 0900 and he missed lunch and didn't have time to unpack before the oath of office but he was fine as we all helped him get ready that Sunday. Also eat a good breakfast before you come in!
2. Like before, you unpack, run through a bunch of stuff with detailers to prepare for the oath ceremony. That's all I'm going to say as it ruins the fun if I tell you, but also I found it better not knowing to much about what was going to happen as its easier to just go with the flow on I day and all of plebe summer. Also I day and plebe summer are going to be very different this year.
3. The hardest day would vary by company and your schedule. I wouldn't say one day is hard it's the long consecutive days that wear you down, so its important to keep a positive mindset!

I personally wasn't a napster so I can't speak on advice for naps. But the ones in my company made plebe summer so much easier for me at the beginning with the help and insight they provide. Most of the time they're great people but if you want advice feel free to PM me and I can send you what my plebe said as she went to NAPS!

Hey! I'm an incoming plebe as well. I'm curious about the 1.5 mile for the PRT -- I've never loved running, so even the minimum time seems pretty fast to me. Do a lot of mids struggle with passing this portion of the PRT? What happens if you fail?
