Hey Line in the Sand, I was on the Coast Guard Cutter Staten Island today

Had to help a refitting company clear the head while it's in Dry Dock in Florida.
The Cutter is out of North Carolina somewhere, have you ever been on it?

LOL, I saw a JG there and was going to ask if they knew a guy named LITS

The XO onboard Staten Island (the LTJG you talked to) graduated a year behind me.

question for LITS

does the navy still do LEO ops in support of the coasties in the Caribbean? I tried to explain those ops to a friend today he couldn't believe 6 weeks of steaming circles squares and triangles in the drug routes and great liberty ports like LaCeiba Honduras. these may have been before your time puddle pirate.

When the Navy does LEO anything...you have to hope a sailor isn't holding a gun....too many accidental discharges. Yes, there are some Navy boats (haha, I said boats) that participate in counter-narcotics...in that area, generally in joint cooperation in JIATF-South. JIATF = Joint Interagency Task Force, and involves far more than just Coast Guard and Navy. Navy frigates do a good chunk of that kind of mission. On these Navy ships you also have Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachments (LEDETS), do lead boardings.

Then I'm thinking of the wrong JG, I looked up Staten Island on global and got a guy...might be old info though.

Your insinuation that the average squid shouldn't be trusted with a loaded firearm is well lets say right on the money.small arms quals on afloat units consists of insuring the sailor is facing the water hand them a weapon with 5 rds tell them to point it at the water and squeeze the trigger 5 times they are then qualified with that weapon. The Navy considers close combat to be in 13 mile range. hand to hand is the max range of a fifty. On my ships (frigates) to eliminate inadvertent discharges of weapons it was my policy to almost never issue weapons and ammo. if I issued weapons the ammo stayed in the armory. Made me feel safer. I can get away with saying these things I am a retired Navy Range Master.

I had a CO that was a LEDET member during the first Gulf war. As his unit relieved the offgoing unit, their top advice....never be of the ladder under a squid with a shotgun.

The JG I saw was female, not sure if she was the XO but she was in charge of the dry docked boat. I deal with the civilian contractor but they were hanging around. I'm told the cutter will be in the water next week and more Coastie's will be there when we scope the system.

Wow I feel like I live on the USCGC Staten Island! I've been there for three days and going back again tomorrow to hopefully finish the work!!!

I've gotten to know most people on the boat and the female JG is an inspector; ironically she was in the same class at the Academy as the XO, who is not here, he's on leave. I was talking to the inspector JG about the academy and of course I had to ask her, "Do you know Line in the Sand?" She laughed after I explained the website and his moniker here.

Another funny twist is the Chief of the Boat has my next door neighbors cell phone on his speed dial, turns out the Captain is out convalescing from back surgery, and he wanted the Chief to call my neighbor (CG Senior Chief Ret./ Res. now) if any emergencies came up while he was away. BTW, this boat is not stationed where we're working on it, it's from NC, that's what's so ironic to me.
