Iranian Military Boats Swarm U.S. Naval Ships

That pilot must be feeling like Maverick.

Flankers are pretty cool.
I mean if you're the type who likes a sort-of copy of a Hornet, made out of beer cans and Pringles lids.

Don't miss the chance to see an SU-27 Flanker perform the Cobra manuever at an airshow. No US fighter aircraft can perform the Cobra without thrust vectoring. If you can't get to an airshow try YouTube.

Yep, love me that Cobra maneuver...would really have loved to see it in a one-on-one...after I quit laughing, I'd either pop him with a heater or gun him. Don't want to get close enough for guns though...too risky. It's not an ACM.

That is a neat trick, but it would get you DRT in a dogfight.

Edit:
Beaten by Steve, yet again.

So isn't that move roughly what Tom Cruise did *twice* in Top Gun in an F14?

No, he chopped his throttles from full burner to idle (VERY risky) and then dumped his boards (speed brakes) and went vertical...killed all forward velocity...similar I suppose, in retrospect.

The beauty of the movie "Top Gun" is that it shows the aircraft really close up and it "wow's" the audience. In reality...no. If you get so close in a merge that you are "too close for missiles, switching to guns" then you didn't do things well at all. The gun's a last resort because if he's in gun range, so are you and a "snapshot" is just that: oops!

In the real world, I want to silently sneak up on him/her with an AWACS feed, then light them up, "Fox Three" them, continue to the merge and if that happens, shoot them in the face with a heater. But it shouldn't get that close.
