Active Shooter at NAS Corpus Christi

Today, it was broadcast on the news that the shooter was a terrorist and that he had no connections to the base.

No doubt, someone saved lives..

"...the gunman tried to speed through a security gate at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, opening fire and wounding the sailor, a member of base security, U.S. officials told the AP. But she was able to roll over and hit the switch that raised a barrier, preventing the man from getting onto the base..."

Bravo Zulu, sailor!

Good training, good instincts, willingness to go in harm’s way = prevention of what could have been more shootings. All those IDs checked, all those people who stop to ask questions, just another day on gate duty, and in the moment that counted, she knew her duty and didn’t hesitate. Glad she had the watch.

Fingers crossed for a meritorious promotion and some chest candy, post-investigation, if the facts merit it.

Exceptional actions by that sailor.

I spent a 3-year tour at a Naval Weapons Station as a Guard Officer. I think the average citizen would be amazed at the professionalism, competency, and actions of these young (my Marines were on their first tours - often 17-19 years old) guards. Often they are the first line of defense in remote posts. They are asked to do some serious stuff. I saw remarkable performance in situations that often went unreported (for good reason) but were just as serious as above.

Hats off to this sailor. Wishing her a quick recovery.

Hours and hours of tedium and boredom with an occasional dose of monotony. Day after day. Week after week. Month after month. Then...
