Questions about CVW

I tried to look through the posts and find my answers but reading them made me more confused. Do I need to email my regonial director to tell him I am interested in CVW? Do I just wait and hope I get an invitation? Finally, I live in MD and attended NASS will that hurt my chances?

It certainly wouldn't hurt to call the Academy as ask if there is space available for a CVW. I started my application to USNA after Christmas last year, so I missed the fall CVWs. After I received my appointment in February, I called up my admissions counselor and he was more than happy to fit me in. Different situation, but the worst thing they can say is not this time.

Agree. NASS participation doesn't mean you won't get a CVW. Just realize that the fact you don't get a CVW doesn't mean you aren't competitive, etc. It's just a numbers game.

What is a CVW and how do you get one?

CVW stands for Candidate Visitation WE. Well-qualified candidates may be invited to spend a long WE at USNA. As I understand the program (someone correct me if I'm wrong), you show up on Thursday afternoon and spend the night in a room with a plebe. You go to class and other activities on Friday. You stay Friday night and participate in Sat. morning activities with your plebe. You leave around noon Saturday.

The benefit is that you get to see USNA and the life of a plebe (more or less) during ac year. Some candidates are simply offered CVWs w/o asking. Some ask. However, many very-well qualified candidates don't, for various reasons, get CVWs. It's a matter of numbers -- more candidates wanting CVWs than spots. Thus, not getting offered one doesn't mean you're doomed. In all honesty, being offered a CVW is a good thing but does NOT mean you are definitely getting an appointment.

If you're offered a CVW and can at all afford to attend (they're not paid other than for recruited athletes, and that's a different thing), you should do so. It's another opportunity to see what USNA is all about. Declining a DVW will NOT hurt your chances.

To add to this point, I went to one last March, and at that point, quite a few of the people still had not yet received an appointment. Don't know how many of them did eventually get that package in the mail. But yeah, if you can go, I'd recommend it. It is a great opportunity to ask questions and see what life is like.

Son will be at CVW one week from today! Two questions:
1. Would it be appropriate for him to drop by the admissions office to introduce himself? He made a couple of updates to his application and thought it would be a good opportunity to make sure everything is A-OK.
2. Has anyone ever heard if the candidates have the opportunity to do their CFA while attending the CVW?
