foreign language

Most colleges prefer three or more years of a foreign language, but I could not fit French 5-6 into my schedule. (I am a junior with two credits of French)

However, I lived in China for a couple years and I am fluent in Madrain Chinese. Will USNA look at my AP Chinese scores and SAT II Chinese scores? If so, which one do I take?

If I recall, isn't there a place on the academy's online application where they come right out and ask you what languages you speak?

I bet if you mention somewhere that you are fluent in Mandarin they will take notice.

i don't mean to steal the topic but I can't fit in JROTC, Spanish 4 and Finance in my schedule so which one should I take? (Finance is now required for graduation in my county)

Hi jeffding,
I have seen this mentioned before in regards to "most colleges want three or more years of foreign language".
I can say the colleges we have applied to did not and they were big "names".
Notre Dame, Case Western Reserve, Ohio State and Rutgers. The admissions of these Universities said two years foreign language. When my daughter attended NASS , she was told by admissions two years. I know most of all State Universities say two and two of the mentioned major private universities said two.
Just curious. Please correct me if I am wrong.

navy12, Does your school offer independent study? My daughter had trouble fitting AP government and politics into her schedule. They allowed her to push her JROTC into independent study. She simply went down over her lunch and did her lessons. JROTC, she was in her fourth year. Her Colonel pushes this for all Seniors for he knows most are craming all the required courses under the wire.
Navy12, I asked in a prior post for someone to better clarify the language mandates. My daughter applied to some major universities and they said two years of language. I have seen on this site many are told different things in regards to the admission process, but we were told during her NASS that two years is prefered. I bet you are going to apply for the NROTC scholarship too, so I would check with the Colleges you are going to apply. I can say my daughter took 3 years of language and that did not hinder her at any colleges we applied.
I would check, but JROTC is held high in the admission process for NROTC scholarships. This is what we experienced through her interviews at the universities.
