Here is a mini resume:
I am a rising senior in high school. I have a 4.46 GPA, a 1250 SAT score, am the President of Interact Club, treasurer of Business Professionals of America, the alto saxophone section leader in my band, have 100+ community service and am currently working a job.

I am currently working on my nominations and training for the CFA, so I’ll update this later as well.

Have you played a sport? West Point likes to see sports on your list of accomplishments.

Unfortunately, marching and concert band has restricted my ability to play a sport. I am in top band now and was appointed section leader though.

improve SAT and continue to work on leadership roles stressing quality over quantity. Many folks get admitted with no sports but have band on their resume.

In your opinion, what is considered a “quality” leadership role? I am almost positive I will be selected as an officer for my National Honors Society chapter and am starting my own ping pong club at school for the upcoming year. Are these good things to include on my application or are there more attractive positions I could attain?

Additionally, what do you think my SAT should be? I know West Point’s average SAT score isn’t much higher than my current one. I am taking a prep course and am sure it will increase by at least 25-50 points.

Thank you for your help 😁😁

I’m a little skeptical about the the statement that “many” get admitted with no sports. The numbers published on prior classes tell us that a large majority of recent classes have Varsity Letters. But, lack of same is not necessarily a disqualifier. I think for a non-athlete, a very solid CFA might help convince WP you can handle the athleticism/fitness needed at WP. I agree entirely that quality of leadership roles is what matters. It isn’t hard to collect titles or have a lot of leadership positions, the issue is what did you do and how you communicate that so WP understands the quality of leadership. Of course, some things are easier than others for WP or other Academies to evaluate just because of the experience of knowing what those roles involve, i.e., various roles at Boys State, Girls State, Class President. I imagine being a leader in band could be significant in some cases.

I’d also suggest that every 25 or 50 points on the SAT can matter. Improvement on the SAT is likely the most important thing you can accomplish to improve your academic qualifications, and academics is the biggest piece of your application.

It is always tough to put your resume here and ask people to “chance” you. We probably don’t really know enough about your individual circumstances to tell you much about your chances, especially because WP admission is a local and national competition. But, your mini resume probably would lead me to conclude - just one person’s guess - you could be academically qualified. That still leaves physical and medical qualification as unknowns.

Not having sports is fine if you have other leadership positions and Show your a quality leader through your essays. Aim for an above average/max CFA and develop good relationships with your teachers so they can testify of your leadership. And everything else mentioned***

Nobody knows what your chances are. You can easily find out what the profiles look like for classes, these will give SAT scores, GPA etc.

However the formation of a class is like creating a jigsaw puzzle from different shapes. Although some of those shapes maybe very similar, slight differences need to be taken into account if you are to build the perfect jigsaw/class. I freely admit to having stolen this analogy but it is the best one by far that I have seen to explain how service academies create their classes.

The best advice that anyone can give is to make you application the best it can be. Ensure your GPA is as high as it can be as well as your SAT score. The point I would stress is to ensure that your application details the aspects that differentiates your application from others. If the academy has 20 applications where the GPA and SAT is the same what is going to make yours standout?

Good luck!

Its not the role, its what you bring to the role. How well did you lead the organization? What did you accomplish as its leader? How did you improve it?

GPA looks good, a higher SAT would benefit you greatly, no sport participation means you'll have to nail the CFA, good community service, leadership positions look okay but only if you made an impact while in the positions. I'm also applying for C/o 2025, good luck to you!
