Hello,
For AROTC I decided to rank Dartmouth as my #1 choice for uni. My #2-5 choices are state schools. Since Dartmouth is so competitive and a reach for me, if I get the AROTC scholarship, but do NOT get acceptance to my #1 school am I still obliged to apply the scholarship to that school? (In other words, will I be tied to Dartmouth). If not, can I transfer it to my second/third/fourth choice as I wish OR do I have to fill out forms to transfer the scholarship? Will applying to ivy leagues/strong/popular AROTC schools increase the competition? Or does the school not matter to the AROTC board?
Not intending to bombard y’all with questions, but any input/clarification on this process would be 👍👍👍

you have to fill out forms to transfer the scholarship. The transfer is nearly always allowed. I cant think of one the last few years (on this board) that was disallowed.

My son was not accepted to his first choice (out of state public school), transferred his 4 year scholarship to his last choice (in-state public school), then transferred his scholarship again to a school that he was wait-listed and was not listed on his original application.
Do the paper work and have a good reason for transferring.

So if I don’t get accepted to my first school, but do get accepted to my second school, do I still have to request transfer?

Google is your friend (and this took less than a minute to accomplish). Although not the official ROTC website, it looks like our friends @clarksonarmy have addressed this question at length:

https://goldenknightbattalion.com/2018/04/03/how-to-accept-transfer-an-army-rotc-scholarship/

This topic has also been addressed several times on this forum and could be answered though a simple search query, not unlike your Fitness Test discussion thread. I strongly encourage you to take the time to do the research yourself on these types of topics (both on this forum and through search engines). Everyone on this forum is here to help and support those applying to serve, whether that is through an SA, ROTC program, or OCS/OTS. HOWEVER, self-help and responsibility are important traits and doing the research first before asking the question is an essential life skill, especially as a potential future JO. So, slow down, take your time to look for the answer on your own, and then ask if you cannot find what you are looking for.

This is how it worked out for my DS - listed 7 schools in order of preference. Received scholarship offer to schools 1,2, and 4. He could have selected any of those without requesting a transfer. He selected #1. If you wanted to (or needed to) select schools farther down on the list (in my DS example, 5, 6, or 7) you’ll need to request the transfer. If you can, apply early to all your schools and you should have a decision before the second board meets. You can upload your acceptances to your portal. Simply applying to an ivy will not impress the board...if you have an acceptance from an ivy uploaded to your portal that would be a plus.

Thank you. I talked to my recruiters about his and looked online- however, I wanted clarification as this is a big decision. Thanks for providing the link- exactly what I was looking for :))

Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much

You can also change or order and schools even after you’re board ready....and right up to just before awards come out, if I’m remembering correctly.

That would be nearly impossible. Dartmouth ED decisions don't come out until mid-December and RD decisions are at the end of March. That would be late for a ROTC application.

If you’re willing to go to Dartmouth with or without an ROTC scholarship, go for ED. If not, go RD. Careful with ED...lots of discussion on the forum.

Last year the second board met in January, so DS was able to upload his early acceptances he received in mid December. You’re right, may be different this year if the second board meets earlier. Just to clarify, I would recommend applying Early Action to schools that offer that option - in general I would not recommend Early Decision (binding), but YMMV. Didn’t realize Dartmouth didn’t have early action. 6 of the 7 schools DS applied to had early action.
