Hello all,

Woke up two days ago to a text from my PL informing me that all MSI and MSIII cadets will be placed in quarantine for two weeks.

Oh boy.

So, Jarhead packed up everything in his dorm and prepared to move, when he received another text saying "Wait until you're contacted to move. Your orders are to shelter in place for the time being."

Jarhead's been in his room for two days, awaiting orders. I've taken the advice of many forum posters on here, and I'm hurrying-up and waiting. I've kept myself busy with lots of anxious pacing, homework, and fighting people on the internet. Why don't people admit when they're wrong??

I've got nothing better to do, so I'll be blessing y'all with daily updates. :)

Hotty Toddy!

Interested in burning some time and talking out loud like you are slightly demented? The “Coffee Break Italian (or French, Spanish, others),” free podcasts for conversational-style learning and refresher. Good exercise break for the brain, makes it work in a different way. I’m working on my French brush-up, because we swear once we can safely travel again, we are planning a vineyard-heavy trip to Bordeaux and then on to Brittany and Normandy.

I get my daily news in German ;)

And I’m actually taking Spanish right now. I could NEVER learn French, too many silent letters.

I spent 14 days in ROM earlier this summer. I passed the time by attempting to do absurd amounts of pushups every day.
Have fun, stay sane.

Howdy howdy howdy!

Day 2:

What's worse than BEING in quarantine? I'll tell you: not knowing whether or not you're in quarantine.

We keep getting conflicting information... are we IN quarantine? Do we just not go to ROTC events? Oh well. Staying frosty :)

Here's something, the supreme court ruled that all 50 states could legally marry same sex couples in 2015... so it's only been 5 years since some states allowed same sex couples to marry.

Jeez. Seems like it had been longer, and in some states it was, but it was really 5 years ago. Just interesting to think about.

There's this great song called F2020 (the F stands for exactly what you think it does) look it up! It's on my workout playlist

Hmmm lets see, I spent about 2 hours pacing in my room after class... and an Ole Miss robot brought me lunch. I'm not even kidding. Ole Miss food robots can bring students food.

Now I went back to another 2 hours of pacing, and then an hour of working out in my dorm, and then homework.

Do I start Assasian's creed 2? Or do I finally get around to playing COD world at war?

-OR-

Do I just continue playing black ops 1? Which is VERY appealing.

Hope y'all are being safe!

Google "Jail Cell Workouts", pretend you are locked up and work-out all day.

On a serious note - I am assuming all of your classes are online? Do you have a room-mate?

How’s about binge reading?

Is there anything that intrigues you beyond your world? Give me a subject and I’ll give you a title.
I brought with me the only two books that will last me four years.

The bible and the Catcher in the Rye.

Oh wait, my roommate DOES have a copy of some James Patterson novel which sounds good.

If you have a library card with your hometown library, look into the Cloud Library app. Download the free app onto your device, open the free app, look for your library, put in your account number, set up your profile, look for books by genre, author, etc., or browse the newly arrived. My library also has Kanopy, with foreign and art house films and documentaries. Overdrive is another library e-book app that is often used, but I tend to use Cloud Library. I assume there are mobile versions for computer use. Reading books this way is not my favorite, but I like having books with me, and the portability is unbeatable.

Oh, and if you ever want to read a book that takes forever to read (or feels like it), I labored through the 760 pages of Thomas Pynchon’s “Gravity’s Rainbow” in college. I’m still not sure I got the point.

And then he can read James Joyce’s Ulysses.;)

Give him a break.

@Jarhead713 ,

Read up about Julia Reed, who just passed away. She was a proud Mississippian who tolerated no fools, spoke in almost Shakespearean profanity, and wrote beautifully about the sights, sounds and tastes of the South as she experienced through her family.

Much of her writing resonated with me as a Tennessean, where she visited often as a child.

@Jarhead713 , I will recommend The Count of Monte Cristo. Long, amazing, adventure revenge novel that has a delicious plot. Even some time spent in jail, which you might be able to relate to.
Too funny. Loved the Count. My favorite escapist reading in college included reading or re-reading the entire works of Alexandre Dumas (musketeers! “All for one, one for all!”), Sir Walter Scott (knights and castles!), Robert Louis Stevenson (pirates!), Jules Verne (Capt Nemo!), Daniel Defoe (Lilliput! Robinson Crusoe!), the Scarlet Pimpernel series (historical derring-do!) by Baroness Orczy, along with the obligatory everyone-was-reading-Tolkien.

Ok, fellow Dumas fanatic. LOVED the Dartagnon trilogy, and YES....escapism at its finest. Might be a good time to reread, in fact.

With apologies to @Jarhead713 for me joyously sprinting down this rabbit hole, my first job was at the county library when I could get a work permit at 13 for a certain number of hours per week during the school year, and more during the summer. I was not a successful baby sitter, so I lucked into this job. One to two days a week I got off the bus at the library, and worked at shelving books, unpacking new ones, repairing torn spines and other chores for a few hours. The two librarians, Miss Lillian and Miss Fraser, let me read to my heart’s content and pointed me toward all the greats works of literature. They also forbade me to open books with “adult content,” such as “Valley of the Dolls” or “The Godfather.” Anything that was “racy,” as determined by Miss Fraser, was kept in a special locked bookcase behind their desk. Patrons wishing to check those out had to brave her steely eye. I will forever be grateful for the vast expanse of literature they pointed me at. Miss Lillian quietly steered me toward Henry Fielding’s books, and there was certainly some genteel raciness in “Tom Jones” and “Joseph Andrews.” All of Dickens and Hardy as well, plus American writers such as James Fenimore Cooper, Edith Wharton, and others. They made sure I read biographies of Eleanor Roosevelt, Sojourner Truth, Amelia Earhart, Hypatia, Ada Lovelace, Dr. Marie Curie and so many more that were not mentioned in history books or only in passing. I worked there until my last college summer. Funny how we grow to realize and appreciate early influences much later in life.

Now, back to our detainee of the moment, Jarhead.
