Unexpected LoA to an Unlikely candidate

Hello all,

I have been prominent for my enthusiasm on this forum, and I thank all in this community for sharing a sense of commonality and comraderie in our pursuits and dreams.

I am happy to say that I have received an LoA. Now, I am not the typical candidate who receives such letters, as many components of my application were not the best or superior to others. But keep in mind, that with an unbreakable resolve and unrelenting effort, everyone can attain such a great honor.

I pray for all my fellow applicants in the path they tread. Thanks all for your counsel. GO NAVY!

Congrats! Obviously you weren't as unlikely as you might think! The Class of '13 will be eagerly awaiting your arrival!

Congratulations on your LOA! I have been following your posts as well and remember you were thinking you were going to NAPS. So I am sure this is quite a surprise!!! Can I ask....what were your GPA, SAT scores and extra curricular and sports. I received a letter saying I was scholastically qualified but have already passed the Dodmerb and have taken the CFA. Do you think you LOA was due to your close communications with your regional director or BGO? Just wondering on all the above....again, congratulations!
 
An LOA is issued to highly qualified candidates who fit the needs of the upcoming class of 2014 at USNA. NOT THOSE WHO KEEP IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THEIR BGO OR REGIONAL DIRECTOR. :eek:

I can only imagine how many calls the BGO's and RD's would be getting now if the myth that being in "close contact" with them was the path to an LOA! There'd probably be a mutiny among BGO's!

Not to sound too harsh here, but some of you need to spend some time reading on this forum. Search things which interest you, such as LOA, and you will find many useful posts. A number of posters are alumni, BGO's etc and are chock full of good advice.
 
NAPS

NAPS is an offer made from USNA, generally to candidates they are very intersted in, but have some concern that those candidates would benefit from an additional year of academic prep before coming to USNA.

A candidate cannot be "thinking they are going to NAPS." The candidate does not apply to NAPS. Candidates apply to USNA and there are several outcomes to that application effort:

1. LOA, conditional upon fulfilling one to several conditions (CFA, medical, nomination, etc) to USNA

2. Appointment to USNA (Arrives in blue vinyl folder with certificate)

3. "Thin White Envelope" (TWE) received carrying letter of no acceptance.

4. Offer to attend NAPS

5. Offer for a Foundation Scholarship......to attend another prep school to boost academics prior to USNA.


It should be noted that NAPS or Foundation scholarship are not guaranteed routes to USNA. Those youth must compete for nominations from their home district as well. However, I believe that a successful year at a foundation or prep school is a very sure path to USNA. Basically, I think an appointment the year following is the candidates to lose in this circumstance.
 
Thank Just a Mom for putting more clarity into my question about NAPS. Yes, he was told NAPS was a possibility for him.

I don't post very often and this is the reason why...some responses are just too harsh and so why even bother.

Wow! I wouldn't consider most of the responses on this forum to be too harsh. Responses coming from alumni, BGOs or current mids are just the harsh reality of the USNA application process.

By no means do I think these comments are meant to insult or demean any candidate; only to present the facts and assist you in successfully complete the process.
 
I did not mean to be "harsh." Just trying to make sure people understand.

Clearly, it is not valuable for these candidates to think that close contact with BGO or Regional Director generates that coveted LOA!:eek:

You are right on! Bugging your BGO or RD will not do much to strengthen you whole person index. As a previous post once stated, BGOs don't really make or break you, your record will speak for itself. Our purpose is to meet the candidate face to face, ask some questions and then paint a picture of you for the board. Period.
 
I agree about some people being "TOO HARSH":eek:...none of us here know EVERYTHING...that is WHY we network. I believe a little kindness and consideration goes a VERY long way. Remember, you have a choice in how you word things on here...so please...(and you know who you are) if you are going to be sarcastic and unkind...it is best not to respond. It is always better to be a little kinder than necessary! Have a GOOD day all!!

Truthfully, I'm really suprised I got an LoA because I didn't have the best SAT or ACT scores, and I wasn't the top 1%. Yes, I do call my BGO every week, and my admissions officer maybe once a month, but thats just to ask questions. It was probably boiling down to all the leadership I had as I am a very active guy with sports, clubs, community. Or maybe, though I don't want to bring this up, because I am a multi-lingual minority (4+ languages). I really can only thank God for his blessing and Grace that a miracle like this is bestowed upon me. Good luck to all applying.
