Hi, I am curious how frequent it is for someone to transfer from a senior military college to a service academy after their first or second years there?
I'm sure that many of you have chosen a service academy as your first choice, but then was admitted to a senior military college, did you decide to stay or did you try to apply for a service academy?

I know of a few who transferred from VMI to West Point after rat year... to include General Patton.

I don't know exactly how common this is. I can only think of 2 in my four years of the top of my head (and they both went to USMA), but there may have been more. I may just have not known where they went when they didn't come back to the Institute.

The main drawback I can see is that, in general, the SA's do not accept transfer credit. I seem to recall hearing once that USNA will take a certain number of a certain type of transfer credits, but I do not know much about that. It's really worth checking out before spending money on an entire year of tuition at an SMC though.

Transfer isn't really the word you want use- basically you are applying for appointment to a Service Academy. Unlike a transfer from one civilian college to another and moving your credits with you, going from any college- to include an SMC- to a Service Academy will leave you with - 4 years at the Service Academy. A couple of kids from my son's class (VMI class of 2012) went to a Service Academy after their Rat year. I can't really speak for them but I suspect that it is a tough call to make as you will have invested a lot mentally, physically and academically into that 4th class year at VMI or the Citadel.

So, most people do not go to an SMC if they weren't accepted to their SA pick?
