It’s August, Admissions is looking at the first puzzle pieces to make up the Class of 2025, LOAs are being drafted for some small number of the class, applications are coming in, nom interviews are starting up, DoDMERB hurdles are being tackled and the list begins.

General suggestions/guidance:

- Resist posting until there is an offer
of appointment in hand/portal and you have certainty.
- If you have an LOA, sit tight, wait until you have an actual offer of appointment. You will know it when you see it.
- This thread is not for NAPS or Foundation prep offers, save that good news for its own thread.
- Try not to go off on tangents and ask questions about other topics here, so “the list” is the primary focus.
- It’s recommended to not put your District, for privacy reasons. With the mosaic theory of intelligence, identities can be ferreted out and associated with your other questions or comments.
- “Direct” is usually taken to mean right from high school.

HOW TO ADD A NAME
: This is DIY self-reporting and self-updating the full list. Mods don't update the list. Kindly posters occasionally do, but the burden falls on posters to copy the list, add their entry and post the updated list. Ditto for later edits from Undecided and then re-posting the entire updated list.

HOW TO CREATE UPDATED LIST:
Method 1, on full website.

Copy the most recent list, paste into your new post, use the next number, enter your info in a similar format, post. If you don’t do this, and just post an entry and not the updated list, you risk the next poster updating the last list, the one without your name, and leaving you stranded and off the list.

Method 2, works well on mobile site on smartphone.
Start a new post by Quoting the most recent complete list. Delete the “quote stuff” at the beginning and end of the list. You now have a complete all-text list that will not act like a Quote. At the end of that list, choose the next number and add your entry. Post.

Don’t forget to go back and update Undecideds! Same methods as above, just edit your original entry

FORMAT for New Entry:

Next appointment number)
SAF forum name/self, DD, DS/LOA or No LOA/Date of Appointment Notification/Accepted or Declined or Undecided/Nom sources, including State, MOC or Sen/Other Nominations/via NAPS, Foundation prep, self-prep, college re-applicant or applicant, direct appoint from HS, enlisted

SAMPLE ENTRY:
1)BaconFiend/DD/No LOA/Jan 7, 2025/Accepted/VA-Sen, Presidential Nom/direct appoint

I'm a little confused about this...

The Extracurricular Verification form wasn't even sent out until a week ago, so there's no way anyone could have even completed their application fully until just very recently (unless that was a regional problem, but in that case that problem occurred in every region that my VNASS company has members in).

Also, my BGO said that he was under the impression that no Admissions Board had met yet.

Could you have gotten an LOA while still missing these forms that haven't gone out until recently? I realize that the admissions team realizes that there's problems with the portal, but I wasn't aware that we were actually eligible for anything...

Sorry if I have some sort of a misunderstanding.

Think broadly.

It’s about this time every year we see the spigot start to flow, and all I did was boost the thread so when those first offers do hit, SAF members won’t have to search too hard to find it. Non-COVID/new system years, we typically see the flow starting in late September or October.

There are always exceptions. Look at last year. There was an offer of appointment very very early. USNA has complete discretion. If they decide that someone is fully qualified with a nom, even if their application isn’t quite complete, they can offer an appointment. The Superintendent makes the offer on behalf of the Secretary of the Navy. The admissions staff and board do the legwork. There is, however, a lot of discretion built in. There may be a candidate who is so burdened with halos the normal process is shortened. Not the norm, but possible. I had a boss who used to say “If it wasn’t carved on a stone tablet and came down from a mountaintop, there is the potential for change.”

One scenario is a brilliant enlisted sailor or Marine who had strong HS performance, was able to take standardized tests and got eye-watering scores, has no need to go to NAPS, got walks-on-water-AND-created-it” performance evaluations and CO’s recommendation showcasing phenomenal leadership and performance, throw in operational experience, DoDMERB got done quickly with no problems, CFA just fine and Supe gives him or her one of the noms set aside for Fleet or Corps applicants - bingo.
Extra credit if the member is a SEAL or Marine with combat experience and personal awards. I think that is a decent substitute for extra-curricular activity form.

A primary source on the Yard just confirmed to me Admissions Board is meeting. Remember everything happens in stages, with various elements reviewed and assessed in a big flow.

I remember the early superintendent appointment last year that caused such titillations. That young man is living his dream as a plebe right now. No need to try to understand the complexities or nuances. More importantly, make yourself the best candidate you can be and leave a positive impression wherever you can. When those on the forum say, “it is a marathon, not a sprint”, they are not joking. It is so early in this cycle, buckle up and assume May 1 is the date you are looking for. Anything before that is absolute gravy.

Let’s pause for a moment. We have a lot of new readers.
A LOA is a Letter of Assurance (not “appointment”). The letter assures the recipient of an offer of appointment should all specified conditions be met, and the applicant is fully qualified.

An offer of appointment is exactly that.

Thank you for posting this ... as the latest I heard a few weeks ago (I've been traveling for a week, and more or less out of contact ), Admissions Board was not meeting yet was a few weeks behind the power curve. It goes without saying, 2020 is going to be different in many ways. Beside the issues with COVID, virtual meeting, SAT/ACT flexible, etc, as most Candidates have seen, and many BGO's can attest, the roll out of the new Admissions system has been less than optimal. That said, a lot of very talented people (including Admissions and some hard charging BGO's volunteering their time and expertise), are busting their you know what to make this year as normal as possible.

What does this mean to the Candidates ? You can spend alot of time analyzing the timing of Appointments from prior years, and worry about being passed by the wave, or you can recognize that some things are beyond your control (good training for a future in the Navy), and focus on what you control, them move on to working on your Plan B's and C's , etc. I've said this in the past, and its extra important this year -- worry about what you can control. I've been doing this for many years (longer than many of the Candidates have been alive); I know many of the people involved in Admissions, and am confident that they will do everything they can do to overcome all of the obstacles and seat the best class they can this year.
Bottom line, be patient, be flexible. and sit back and enjoy the ride ..its a marathon, not a sprint...but with the challenges of 2020, they've added another half mile (or more) to the marathon.

If I could give triple likes ^^^ I would.

Thank you for clearing this up for me!

I would have a lot less gray hair if I found this forum BEFORE DS submitted his application to USNA. Those months waiting were horrible - coupled with both of us being home for a good portion of the waiting last year and not much to do. It is SO COOL to be a proud MidMom AND read all this now. I totally feel for all the applicants and their families. Prior enlists, NAPS, LOAs...all foreign to us then-we literally just waited and wondered! Perhaps less was better (caused a lot of grays though)-but oh the excitement when he got to put his appointment on this board! Good luck to all the candidates! It's going to be fun to watch, listen, and chime in now and then to all the 2025 questions!

A girl in my son’s class was just appointed to USAFA for the swimming team. She signed her contract on Friday.

We just finished his nom applications and he’s finishing up his SA applications as we speak.
He had his USMC ROTC interview about a month ago.

I recognize that this year is a new situation for USNA and that the wisdom of patience applies even more this year. An additional challenge for candidates and expectant parents this cycle is that it is very difficult to access information and because the experiences of earlier cycles/portals may not apply. 2 recent quick examples: DS submitted CFA results and a few days later there was a check mark. The next day, the check disappeared and then reappeared a day later. DS received communication from DoDMERB that he was deemed qualified. WP portal reflected that status the following Monday and USNA portal still shows nothing.

There have been no communications from USNA throughout which can be chalked up to system issues. The additional anxiety in my home centers around "is the admissions board meeting to evaluate candidates, and does the new CIS actually have the full data set, even if it is not reflected well on portal"?

Because there have been no updates on this thread, it's hard to have context for what might be happening this year.

While it is certainly possible that the young lady has received an actual offer of appointment, the participation agreement from the swim coach is not an offer of appointment. It is a non-binding agreement that the candidate has a spot on the team, assuming that the candidate is eventually admitted.

It was confirmed a few weeks ago Admissions Board is meeting. The Admissions team is working all the usual challenges to put the class together, along with the extra IT fun this cycle.

.
@Capt MJ .... where’s the trickle of appointments we normally see by now? I would rather that they take their time, I suppose .... look’em over really good.
.

I think all the normal rhythms have been disrupted by the twin challenges of IT system shifts and COVID/working from home.

I like to think they are “making a list, checking it twice,” this cycle, to be sure they are looking at everything as thoroughly and mindfully as they usually do when they build out a class. They know they have to get it done, and they will, but their first priority is a quality process, which must be quite painful right now. My sources on the Yard tell me everything is frustrating or is taking longer, but forward progress is being made. I think “the list” is being checked multiple times, not just “twice!”

^ This. I've been telling Candidates to be patient and expect everything to take longer this year. The application deadline was extended to accommodate the February ACT/SAT, and NOMS/APPOINTMENT really can't get to the heart of the process until all Applications and Nominations are in.

Admissions is struggling with both COVID and the new Admissions platform, but they are adapting and overcoming, as we would expect. I've been impressed by their outreach efforts since COVID , and dedication to addressing all of the issues that come with the new Admissions platform. It may take longer and appear a bit chaotic , but I am confident that that Class of 2025 will have the same thorough, thoughtful admissions process that USNA has always had, The thing for SAF readers to remember is that experiences from prior years will not necessarily apply this year, particularly when it comes to how the portal works -- Candidates in the past had near instant gratification when something was submitted on line because the portal reflected it immediately, The new system has a delay of varying lengths. I've been told that submissions have to be reviewed before they reflect on the Candidate portal. I am sure there will be a continuing improvement process with this new Platform, and would expect that over time we will get back to instant gratification, but until then...be patient and have faith in the process, there are a lot of dedicated men and women in the Admissions office (as well as BGOS) who are working hard to bring the Class of 2025 together, and ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the process.

No, this is not an appointment to pop the seal - hang on - just a self-bump to the thread to keep it breathing while we eagerly await the first additions to the list. It is indeed a very different year this year, for the many reasons discussed above. I can only imagine the steady quality-focused work that is going on in Admissions. They will get the class built!

I was on the Navy Staff (meaning the Pentagon staff working for the CNO), and the project belonged to my team when we started switching the Navy from its original unit-based email address system (captmj@opnav.navy.mil) to the then-new “uniquename@navy.mil” universal naming system, so you never had to change emails, live. OPNAV staff was first. Let me just say, ouch. It required excruciating attention to detail so nothing was lost. Odd emails squirted out of the system. Fixes occasionally addressed one problem but created another. I can only sympathize with a class build-out during a live system switch. Since during any one cycle you are managing various classes with different cycle events all year long, it’s difficult to just stop all actions.

I have faith we should see something at some point!
