I have a few questions regarding sports and admissions at CGA. 1. What percent of the class each year are recruited athletes? 2. In order to fill team rosters, are teams allocated any slots due to players graduating each year, etc.? It would seem theoretically, that if there were not any candidates for a particular sport that the team roster would not be full. If so, how does that impact the makeup of the class?

Students are not accepted based on the very fact that they would fill as team spot. While coaches have input during the selection process, they do not have the final say. The Coast Guard Academy selects candidates that are most likely to successfully serve in the United States Coast Guard. Their first thought is not to pick your next top NFL quarterback.

Filling 23 inter-collegiate teams with competitive players from a total enrollment of less than 1,000 cadets is difficult.
An "impact player" will be given a small admissions "boost" while a player who is judged as not having an immediate impact on a team or sport will not.
It's never THE deciding factor, nor are certain appointment spots reserved for certain sports teams.
While fielding competitive teams is but one goal of the academy, at the D3 level it is not going to be as big of a factor as it is at the D1 level.
