CT Senator Interview

Yah One more step closer. The mail came today (10/31) with a request for an interview from Senator Dodd scheduled for 11/14/09. Keeping my fingers crossed. Anyone else from CT?

We're in Ohio, and son had first interview this Saturday, on Halloween, he said it was "Scary" LOL (actually, he said the interviewers were pretty cool and they mainly asked him about leadership--no current event questions)

Then later that day, he got a letter from Senator Voinovich for his interview scheduled for Nov 21st.

Good luck to all of you, just remember they know you will be nervous, so just keep that in your mind and it will actually calm your nerves.

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks before you find out. Some MOCs have their list and it is basically cursory for the nom, some will have way more, and it is still a competition to get it, that is why some will hear sooner than others. Also not all have theirs done on the same day, for one of ours it was over a course of 3 weekends, thus just because they are interviewing 10 or less, don't assume that means all of you are getting one.

While some districts announce their slate as soon as it is decided, the majority don't announce it until at or near the due date of January 31st, even if they interviewed months earlier. There are many reasons for this, including that the MOC is personally going to be briefed. Depending on what is going on in Washington and when votes are taking place, the MOC may not be able to get back to the district to personally discuss the candidates. Typically they are briefed by the staff member responsible for the SA nominations but some will also meet with the nominating committee chair. Scheduling issues can make it so that this briefing may not be possible for several weeks after the interviews or even well into January. Also, while the slates are turned in electronically, there is a paper document as well that must be signed personally by the MOC. It depends on your specific MOC and exactly how they choose to do it, and certainly a districts proximity to Washington can have an impact on it as well. The logistics of a MOC getting to their district when Congress is in session can be insurmountable.

There are many other very good reasons they may choose to hold off announcing the slate until January 31st as well. The key to remember is that, while the waiting is often very difficult, the MOC is interested in getting as strong a slate as possible and as many appointments as possible to the SAs. In order to achieve this objective, sometimes a delay in announcing the slate is a valid strategy. And, this strategy can be of benefit to you, even though you are not aware of it going on.

Son got notice today of interview appointment with Senator Dodd's Selection Committee for the 14th also. He doesn't know yet but I will give him the good news when I see him at school tonight. If I remember correctly from four years ago (has it been that long?) since the Connecticut delegation alternates who goes first and trys to coordinate they notify you pretty quickly. They ask that if you recieve a nomination after evaluation of the first selection committee interview session you withdraw your application from the second Senator before his interview process begins (about four weeks later?). Their reasoning is that they give more applicants a chance for at least one nomination. Of course you still have your House of Representatives interview for your second nomination.

The first time was pretty nerve-wracking for all but it turned out well. Just remember they are not going to try to trip you up. There are no trick questions. Answer honestly and be yourself. GOOD LUCK
