Where was your AROTC scholarship offered to?

My DS was awarded AFROTC Scholarship. How do we find out where his scholarship will be offered. Is this based on the colleges that he selected in his application?
What Type did he receive? See link below at your DS’ primary source:

AFROTC scholarships differ from AROTC in how this part of the process works.

And congratulations!

Not sure but I thought AF ones you choose which school to take it to, that it's not assigned?

^ The above post is correct. The awardee tells them which college they will attend, as long as it has their intended major and meets any financial restrictions on the scholarship type.

4 year to Top 3 for my DD: Penn State-University Park, UNC Chapel Hill and Virginia Tech

My friend may got to UNC or U of SC and I was trying to find out if they offer any room and board incentives to cadets on scholarship.

Not to my knowledge. U of SC certainly didn't when DS attended. He also applied to UNC and they never mentioned it.

If you are outside SC, U of SC offers a Woodrow Scholarship for select OOS students which helps reduce tuition. It's how DS and I could afford attendance there until he was awarded an NROTC scholarship his sophomore year. Of course, once that happened, he lost the Woodrow scholarship.

They are both great units. UNC often does joint activities with Duke and NC State. Marine options at U of SC have access to Ft Jackson and Parris Island for training activities.

Congratulations to you and your DS. AFROTC scholarships are good at any university that has a Detachment or a cross-town university agreement. However, the Type of scholarship awarded may determine where your DS may want to go to school. There are instructions for your DS that he can reference regarding the Type of scholarship he was awarded and how he can use accept the scholarship, as well as the deadline for accepting the scholarship. AFROTC is different than the process that AROTC and NROTC has for scholarship winners.

My DS was awarded a 4 year Type 7 scholarship which covers in-state tuition at a public school. However, my DS plans to go out of state (a private university). I am aware that we can change his scholarship to Type 2, but this would cover his tuition for 3 years. As it stands, we are looking at colleges that have grants for students who received ROTC scholarships. I am totally new to this process so any advice will be highly appreciated.

Most universities will start finalizing the Financial Aid packages for admitted students by March. If your DS has not already done so, he should apply for any merit scholarships that his top universities offer to admitted freshmen. Then, he should contact the AFROTC Detachment and find out if they offer additional scholarships. Lastly, he should contact his admissions counselor and the financial aid office to see if they can offer any additional assistance (possibly a room and board scholarship). Ultimately, your DS is what most universities want - an excellent student that is well rounded and goal driven, with a substantial scholarship toward the university's tuition. You would be surprised how rare it is that students contact financial offices to negotiate. I'm confident that they will work with your DS, and he'll be able to lower the price tag substantially.

airborne1030, thanks for this information. Should he wait until he gets accepted to the school before contacting the financial aid office or AFROTC detacchment?

@Babyface - you're welcome, and CONGRATS to your DS and you. I would have him reach out to the Detachment now and schedule a virtual meeting. That is a good first step. They will get to know him, and it is important that they see how interested he is in attending their university. Some Detachments will have him speak to the Detachment Recruiting Officer. Other Detachments may have him speak to the Detachment Commander. It just depends on how the Commander runs the Detachment. Ultimately, the Officer your DS meets with will be able to answer most of your DS's questions. He should be able to speak to the Financial Aid Office prior to being admitted. They will be able to answer some general questions. If he has not completed his FAFSA, he should do that soon and make sure that he has a complete list of colleges to which he's applied. Once he's admitted, he should schedule a meeting with his admission counselor to see if there is other financial help available. Usually, private universities have a lot more available funds for merit scholarships. Best of luck with everything.
