Appointment Arrival for the USMA?

MOC's are given 72 hours to notify candidate of appointment. Appointment should appear in portal shortly after that. BFE's often go out in batches, so it really depends on logistics/timing.

You can sometimes get a hint from admissions social media - they usually post pictures of batches of appointment in out-going mail bins. Portal being down is can be an indicator that a large number of appointments are being loaded - not fool proof because sometimes it's just routine maintenance.

Good evening, everyone. I just received word yesterday from my Senator’s office via the phone that I’ve been awarded an appointment to the USMA Class of 25’. Any idea when my BFE will arrive in the mail? Thanks!
Congratulations!! Was this for Senator Warner?

DS received his appointment on 12 December and BFE came on 8 Jan.

How often do they meet for appointment? My son just finished his application and I thought everyone had until the 31st for the application packet to be completed but I guess if you submitted early you get appointment earlie. Can someone explain this? Thanks

Each elected official’s slate has to be resolved. That can go fast or slow, with many factors involved.

I suspect most SA Admissions Boards meet weekly, but it’s not like someone leaves that meeting with a list and heads right to a computer to update portals. There are many parallel and intersecting processes, and various groups within Admissions with a hand in the final determination of who will get an offer of appointment and when in the cycle that offer will be made .

I'm curious whether they only look at WCS and just admit top 150 candidates from the NWL or do they take essays, backgrounds, interviews into consideration and sometimes admit candidates with relatively lower WCS and reject ones with higher WCS?

The WCS is exactly that - whole candidate. Though we might take a good guess at everything evaluated and algorithms used, consult studies that are out there, there is both art and science in building out a class. Admissions has decades of experience doing this. They also have discretion in many areas.

So basically if MOC nominates 10 people which means 1 slot is available that year and I don't make that 1/10 place, I have no chance to get into the academy?

The SA has the ability, following certain guidelines, to choose other fully qualified candidates. They also control the VP nom appointments. I provided a link which describes the various pools of candidates.

If you are fully qualified, you have a chance until the SA tells you definitively you are not being offered an appointment.

DS 21 came Priority Mail - with USPS on the case nowadays you should receive BFE by R-day . . .

And Congrats !!!

Appointments fall into several categories dictated by federal law. All appointees must be 3Q + NOM. Appointments from all categories are determined by Order of Merit (WCS score) except:
  • Qualified Principal Nominees
  • Additional Appointees (AA) - these may be appointed out of Order of Merit and are primarily recruited athletes and minorities
A MOC can have an unlimited number of candidates from their district/state. If they nominate ten candidates, all ten can be appointed. If they don't nominate a candidate, that candidate can be appointed if nominated by another source. Nomination sources include: Congressional: House, Senate, VP; Service connected: Presidential, Regular Army, Reserve Component, children of Medal of Honor recipients, JROTC/SROTC, children of 100% disabled Vets, Superintendent
