Hey folks- we need to see more posts from non-VMI folks. I'm happy to keep drumming up interest and posting about VMI but there are some other really great schools out there. Specifically- lets generate a little activity here about the Maritime Colleges and some of the other SMCs.

Maritime Colleges- You have a great story to tell. These are not well known schools but if you are thinking about an academy for the sea services you should consider them. Maritime College faculty, alumni and current students- lets hear from you and tell your story!!
-Sea Terms: Tell me that's not really unique to these schools?! For example- NY Maritime Cadets visited the Azores, Gibraltar, Iceland and Ireland this summer. Mass Maritime spent the Winter in the Carribean. Cal Maritime goes to Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam etc.. Maine Maritime and Texas Maritime have similar stories. These schools are certainly not the normal college experience !
-Professional Licensing - 3rd Mates and 3rd Asst Engineers. Even in a down economy this sector of the economy is still doing pretty well - especially for Engineers.
- Respected Academic programs in small school environments. Marine Transportation/Marine Business; Marine Engineering; Environmental Science; are specialties of these schools and all are in industries that are predicted to be strong for a long time to come.
- Regimental and Commissioning programs. All of these schools produce a fair number of military officers every year especially in the USCG and USN. Graduate from one of these colleges and you will run into fellow alumni throughout your career.
- Affordability: Most of these colleges have regional agreements that treat all signatory states as In-State students for tuition. Not every state has agreements but a surprising number do with each of these colleges. Even if the colleges are not in the agreeements - these are State Colleges and they are pretty reasonable in cost compared to many other alternatives.

Senior Military Colleges. In addition to my Alma Mater- there are several other Senior Military Colleges out there- some of them are among the oldest operating colleges in the Country (Norwich is 1812; Citadel 1842). They are generally either small primarily undergraduate colleges or else a really tightknit Corps of Cadets within much larger State Universities (Texas A&M and Va Tech)- and then there is VWIL within Mary Baldwin college which is really unique- as far as I can tell the only all female Corps of Cadets in the world. A ll of them (with the exception of VWIL which isn't that old) have long histories of commissioning large numbers of military officers with solid Academic programs in regimented lifestyles. These are pretty unique places.

Point of above- If you are an alumnus; a parent; a current cadet or interested in these schools - LETS HEAR FROM YOU!

Bruno,

Thanks for the "shout out" for Maritime Academies and other Senior Military Colleges other than VMI.

As a Norwich graduate - and as an admissions officer at a state Maritime Academy - I must say;

1.) You do a great job promoting SMC's/Maritime Academies - better than some of the admission representatives at our institutions!

2.) Although I am a Norwich grad - I would be proud if either of my sons choose to attend VMI, OR one of the other SMC's OR Maritime Academies.

All of these institutions, coupled with the federal service academies - are special institutions.

I encourage anyone on this website - to feel free to email me if they have questions about any of the institutions above. If I cannot answer the question - I am sure I can get a qualified person to get the answer to you!

I love this site!

To all of the moderators of this site - keep up the good work!

Hi. This is my first post on this forum and I am applying to Norwich University Corps of Cadets as a transfer student. I'm not sure how since I'm not a high school student but I want to gain a commission either in the U.S. Army or the U.S. Marine Corps and compete for a 2-year ROTC scholarship. I am under the impression that I would have to attend and participate before I can compete for a slot. I would be grateful for any advice or insight on the process or its competitiveness. Thanks in advance.

skmay,

I forwarded your posting to an admissions officer at Norwich. I hope they contact you soon!

My daughter got a nice certificate in the mail today for being accepted into The Corps of Cadets for the Physics Program at Norwich! She's going up for an overnight visit in February. She also is waiting to hear on an AFROTC Scholarship :thumb:
