Hey guys!

It's me again - I've posted on this forum before, probably 2 or 3 months ago, and answered any questions that y'all had about West Point, R-Day, being a plebe, etc. I figured it was probably time for another one, considering so many of you are receiving your appointments, or are anxiously awaiting news!

So, feel free to ask me any questions about my experience here, any advice, or just anything you can think of! I'd be happy to help!

Best,

Do you have any advice on how to best prepare for beast over the next few months? Thanks so much for offering your help!

Hello! This is going to sound super redundant, probably, but RUN! Please run more than you think you should. At LEAST two miles a day (taking weekends off), or every other day! They don't need to be fast, but you need to be able to do them, and more reps means that you will get faster! Also, if you are from a cooler part of the US, definitely work on heat acclimation for the summer - otherwise, you will likely suffer from heat exhaustion once (or twice, or three times...) like I did! It is not fun to go from a relatively temperate climate straight into Hudson Valley summer humidity! I highly recommend you take advantage of the process USMA sends out a month or two before R-Day.

Also, work your ACFT prep! Get ready for those overhead medicine ball throws, leg tucks, and T-pushups especially - you will be tested on these things at Beast, and going into them with a working knowledge of how well you can do will help tremendously.

Make sure you approach everything with a good attitude from here, to R-Day, and beyond. Be humble - keep asking for help, and keep asking questions!

Finally, spend time with your family and friends making good memories! That is what will help you when you're struggling. Don't stress too much about all the prep - that is to say, if you have the option between doing something really fun and memorable with your family, and running another five miles, spend time with your family! It will be worth it to have something to look back on instead of grinding along and spending the remainder of your year more stressed out than you need to be.

Hope this helps, and good luck! Can't wait to see you in the Class of 2025!

What does the physical exam on R day consist of?? Thanks.

What does the physical exam on R day consist of?? Thanks.
Honestly, there isn't much of a physical exam on R-Day! They weighed us, got our height, and I think maybe tape-tested us if I recall correctly (tape measure around waist, neck, hips, etc). However, I'm not even dead-sure on the tape-testing. Other than that, I don't remember ever getting a physical exam.

Hope that helps!

Biggest thing, don’t suddenly bring up major medical issues that were not previously disclosed on R-Day and expect to enter West Point with that class.
FACTS!!! People did this on their medical moment of truth at basic training and watching them be upset about getting discharged was crazy. Like what did you think was gonna happen??!!!?

Agree with the thread. Be in best shape of your life and run + push ups. Break in your footwear and try to work up to a 5-10 mile ruck with 30-40 lbs. Try to be able to be close or better than your CFA score. All service academies have problems with many candidates not being able to do anywhere near the amount of Pull ups or Push ups reported on CFAs. One of the reasons WP requires videos.

What are the rules for weekend passes for plebes? Is it one per semester? Also can a plebe leave up to 75 miles and return for taps? My memory fails me from #1 DS plebe year in 2013. Actually with the COVID bubble it's probably a moot point, what would it look like in a regular year?

Honestly, I'm not totally sure about all of it. I do know that, typically, it is one per semester. I don't think that on the standard weekend plebes can leave 75 miles and return for taps. I think it's a 30 mile radius (maybe 50?), and even then it can be restricted to your sponsor's house, etc. It just kind of depends, obviously, on the COVID situation and what higher deems necessary. Sorry I can't provide more help here! I haven't had a normal weekend yet here at West Point!

Upstate N.Y. can be extremes in the summer. And anything north of the Throgs Neck is “upstate” to me. Hot and humid followed by cold and rainy. You can go from heat casualties to hypothermia in one day. DDs Beast was was mostly cold and rainy. She told of New Cadets cramming into portapoties to try and stay warm and dry one night.
When I first brought my DW to NY in the summer she asked if she should bring sweatshirts or shorts. I told her yes.

Two days ago it was a perfect March day promising spring.

Last night I took my dog out and the wind was so cold. It felt like the coldest day this winter.

But to be fair our spring summer and falls are nice up here.

About school officer evaluations:

Does the science one have to be from a Physics teacher? Or can it be from an AP Bio teacher?

I'm asking because I will be taking Physics senior year so I'm not sure it will be enough for the teacher to write a letter that near the application deadline.

Hi! Have you ever heard of anyone just getting in with an ROTC nom, and do you think it’s easiest for someone to get in straight out of high school or college?

Hello!

I am not totally, 100% sure on this, but I'll give you what I know. I know that they do like an eval from a chem or a physics teacher - West Point puts heavy emphasis on those two courses, so having an eval from one or the other WILL help you. If you want it to be your AP Bio teacher, I would email your admissions officer and ask them that question specifically. They are the experts, and they are there to help you! I know I emailed mine with everything I was unsure of, and as long as you're respectful, they're happy to help!

Hope this helps you out, and good luck!

Hello!

I am not totally sure what you mean by an ROTC nomination - if you want to clarify, I can probably answer it a little more in-depth. And honestly, I think it depends on the person as to whether it's easier to get in straight out of high school or college. I got in right out of high school, and for me, it's working out fine. Some people need college as a way to boost their GPA, their academic stats, or even give them a little longer to learn about time management. Essentially, it's all about the individual. I know a lot of successful people here who have gone in straight out of high school, and just as many successful people who spent a year, two, or three in college before coming here!

I hope this helped answer your questions!

A cadet in good standing at a college ROTC unit and some HS JROTC units are eligible to request nominations from those sources. See the Sticky at the top of the Nominations forum and specifics at the SA websites which use those nom sources.

If someone chooses Humanities courses does he have to do math, physics, or biology? How much should I expect? (I would like to attend the International Affairs Major). Can someone do two Majors? which languages can be studied at West Point? Thank you for taking the time to answer :)
