Hello all,
I just received an AFROTC type 7 scholarship as a foreign language major. I'm wondering, can I only switch between languages within my foreign language major, or can I also switch to a non-technical major? If I must stick with a foreign language, can I double major in college (i.e. taking a language along with a business major)? Do I have any other options?
Thanks in advance!

Well, presumably you got the scholarship based on your expressed interest in a foreign language. I know in NROTC people actually specify a particular language (I don't know about AFROTC). So I strongly suspect you cannot change majors without potentially losing the scholarship. Also I believe it's more than majoring in the language but also studying history and culture.

In any case your unit can let you know what options might be open to you.

Ok, thank you for the response. Yeah, I agree that I think I have to stay within my foreign language major to be eligible for the scholarship. However, I wasn't aware that the major had a culture and history component along with the language. Is this a general trend with foreign language college majors, or is this something more specific to ROTC/AFROTC?

Well it certainly has that component for NROTC. I'm not sure about AFROTC, but I would think it would be the same. You'll have to ask your unit to confirm, or research the scholarship type further.

My DS is also a foreign language scholarship recipient. His language is also Russian. From comparing Russian programs, most of them have literature, history, and culture components. Also, many suggest pairing with an Russian area or Euroasian area studies minor. There is still time to apply to many schools. For instance, admissions is still open at University of Nebraska-Lincoln where my son will be studying. They promise a 2 day turnaround on admissions decisions. They also offer to waive out-of-state tuition for AFROTC cadets with an ACT of at least 26 who place a deposit by May 1. If you search other state universities, you may well find the same opportunities available in other locals. You can still use your scholarship for its intended purpose. Of course, you still have the issue of the early decision. You may want to contact them and explain your dilemma.
