The Unclean Not Allowed into Delano

I've stated my understanding that Adm Buono has been under indescribable pressure from various directions, but mostly from MARAD, to follow the received CDC wisdom about the Covid virus. He has tried hard to fly low and allow the mids as much freedom as he thought he could get away with. And that was appreciated. But I think he has stopped trying to be reasonable. Today I think he stopped trying. He simply closed Delano to the unvaccinated mids. The unvaccinated must now march around to the loading dock in the back and (today, at least) wait 20-30 minutes to be served. They then take their food elsewhere. Should be fun when it rains, or snows! Why not also require them to ring little warning bells as they approach others? Or wear a badge of dishonor?

The recent outbreak arose from the Ring Dance on August 22. At least half of those who "caught it" had been vaccinated. Let that sink in. In other words, it made no difference whether these healthy, low risk young people had been vaccinated or not, they were going to get the (new) virus. Needless to say, none of the mids are seriously ill. Certainly not anywhere as sick as many of the mids who reacted badly to the vaccine injection this past Spring. Normal sickness. But the actual state of well being of these kids is apparently irrelevant.

Lighten up! Let the mids eat! This virus is with us for good, and the sooner we start building up natural immunities to it, the better. Otherwise we're just pushing the virus to mutate, and in the meantime, this latest order is leaving very demoralized and hungry mids.

Good afternoon. I am new to this forum and my DS is a proud Mid at KP. I do not post much on social media and try to take most of the craziness in this world in stride but I have to say that not allowing unvaccinated Mids to eat a meal in the dining hall is one of the most ridiculous policies the academy has put fourth to date regarding COVID (and I do agree that The Sup is doing his best). These kids are in class together, in their companies and rooms together, play sports and go to the gym together, etc yet they can’t eat together? What the heck is going on at KP? I mean really think about it! until vaccines are mandated, the academy should stand down this ridiculous order, and I may argue discriminatory policy against those Mids that CHOOSE not to vaccinate. I can only speak for my own DS who tested positive for COVID in March of 2020, and has happily been tested countless number of times since, and continues to turn up negative, that he is in fact demoralized over this policy. He loves KP and his experience over the years have been nothing but positive, but being segregated from the regiment for meals is really opening his eyes to what other possible retaliation may come his way for the free choice that he made. It is well known among the Mids that most chose to be vaccinated so they just wouldn’t have to deal with this type of retaliation, and were not overly concerned about contracting a serious case of COVID. is this what we want from our future leaders, more followers??? As the previous post states, most all of the COVID cases at KP are very mild and to the best of my knowledge, there have been no serious illnesses as they are all young adults in very good physical condition. The facts are now clear about COVID, your own immune system offers you the best protection against this virus (from what I understand 18 of the 25 positives from the ring dance were vaccinated), so let’s all be serious here. All Mids and Plebes should be able to enjoy their meals together, (not to mention that the loading dock kids are not getting the nutrition they need at dinner) and let’s be done with all the craziness. KP should step up and lead the way and not follow in the political footsteps of others. Peace.

Isn’t the Vax now mandated, by DOD, for military? Isn’t this a moot point?

I’ve read a few threads today about this ‘discrimination’ against those CHOOSING not to vax. But isn’t it now required? So no longer a CHOICE, no matter?

KP is very similar to a military academy, but isn't. Nor is it under the DOD. The vaccine is not currently required at KP. And even if it were, there are valid reasons of conscience (and a time-honored legal avenue) for refusing it, i.e., obtaining a religious exemption.

That’s right. I knew that...duh. And the other thread/SA that IS DOD is gone.

DOD, mando vax (sans a few isolated cases), no discrimination. Moot point.

Glad my DS chose USCGA over KP. Vaccination rate their is over 95% and other than indoor mask mandates everything is running as close to normal as possible including in person parents weekend.

Even though KP is under DOT, it Commissions Naval Reserve Ensigns. The DoD policy from The Secretary plainly includes Reserve and Guard members. This meaning the OP's argument is likely moot, as all "Reserve" personnel have until I think November to get fully vaccinated. So unless there is a way to attend KP and NOT Commission, Dod's regs pertain.

Speaking from direct experience, the line for Delano is almost 2x as long as the line for meal pickup. As far as "where do they go if it rains" well, they've already moved the meal pickup inside and it runs extremely smoothly. The staff are trying their hardest.

As far as privacy is concerned, you don't HAVE to show that you're vaccinated. You simply march out of formation to a station on the side of Delano, pick up your meal and go back to barracks. As previously stated, it is almost ALWAYS more efficient and nicer to do this than to actually eat in Delano.

As far as "The only mids getting the virus are vaccinated" with the percentage of the school that is vaccinated, and the reported percentage of breakthrough cases, we are doing almost EXACTLY the average for amount of breakthrough cases. Sports are continuing, classes are in person, morale is still good here. I am so sick of hearing midshipman and parents complain about this issue because it is quite actually a nice option to have. Things here can suck for a lot of reasons, but having to take out food and eat nicely in your room is definitely not one of them.

But the food fights are boring. . . .

This country needs more people like you in it.

Agree with the policy. If not in agreement, free to go elsewhere. Many will commission into military branches and all branches are all vigilant about protecting the fleet, companies, etc. Other branches make visits to KP for recruitment too. It is not a political move. It ultimately protects the individuals called upon to protect this nation. Universities across the nation take the vaccine seriously too. Like to see data also to support the statement most choose vaccine to avoid retaliation. The Supt. has to make tough calls now and have info. none of us are privy too.

Cadets might want to rethink getting the vaccine so that it won't impact their sea year...

According to the latest Masters, Mates and Pilots Union 'Wheelhouse Weekly' newsletter, as of 1 October, Matson Navigation Company will require only fully vaccinated individuals on board their vessels as a crew member, port relief officer or shoregang/standby labor. Currently Matson runs 19 vessels. That's a whole lot of berths that unvaccinated cadets are going to be restricted from filling.. I would expect most, if not all MM&P contract companies, will probably follow suit and implement the same requirement in the coming months. Remember, without sea time a cadet can't sit for a license or graduate..
Another thing to consider, is even if companies don't require them, crew members may be restricted to their ship by local health authorities in foreign ports if they are unable to show proof of vaccination...
