Your Son/Daughter is Going Where?? Round 2

We had a round of this with three plebes at the dinner table post-game last night (10 lbs slow-braised brisket for 5 people with very little leftover, garlic bread, raw veg, bacon ranch dip, the usual 5 kinds of ice cream). Hilarious.
Plebe 1: My HS friends now at civilian colleges are surprised I am taking college courses.
Plebe 2: My ex-BF told everyone I was too stupid to get in any college. (Immediate and universal assurance she was well rid of him.)
Plebe 3: “So, can you put on regular clothes after your military classes?” (the favorite)
I should have added how we were very impressed about how they educated others in a very low-key, amiable and humorous way without going into tedious detail, especially when people were truly interested and had no background or exposure.

After DS has entered this year at USMA Im Astonished / disapointed even with our large family how clueless 90% of my close contacts are about the academy's.

This whole discussion is no less tiresome than it's been for the past how many years.

Is it really so hard to just smile and walk away? Why not just explain the difference between the tracks of an officer vs an enlisted man or woman. If you're unfamiliar then familiarized yourself. Think for one second how this discussion would look from the outside.

I have clients, farmers and ranchers, who would be uniformly considered dumb rednecks by the looks of them in their work day clothes. Trust me. they aren't dumb and they don't care what other people think.

I don't begrudge educating others. But I appreciate both understanding and being understood by close friends, and it's a disappointing experience when it seems to not be working. I don't think it's a bad thing to use a context like SAF to help "recharge" each other, and build camaraderie with some over shared experiences. And if it doesn't apply to you, is it really so hard to smile and continue scrolling?

Traveled to TAMU today as DD got to order her Aggie Ring 🙌
DH suggested I wear my NAVY gear to see how she would react 😡 but I knew better…🤣

Before heading back home we stopped to buy some more Aggie gear and while in the store an employee approached me grinning 😄 ear to ear to ask about my Naval Academy bag and how I knew about the Academy. When I told him our DS was at the USNA he was SO excited for him and us! Then he pointed to his name tag and it said from Annapolis, MD…what a small world! 🌎 The nice young man is a Freshman at TAMU…❤️

Where? Is that in Tennessee?

I kid, I joke.

Can't go wrong with a degree from either place.

My DS,2025, was a senior in high school last year and knee deep in the admission process. He was discussing his future plans with his friends. His teacher jumped into the conversation and told my son that he was going to hell if he killed someone while fighting for this country. She told him that God did not distinguish between reasons for killing. I wanted to personally track her down and say my peace. However, I tried to take the high road, I told my son that he will always encounter people who are lucky enough to live in a country where they can say whatever they want, even though they will never appreciate the men and women who ensure that they have the right to their voice. He decided to speak to our priest who was wonderful. In some ways I think it helped him to clarify some important issues in his own mind but, I still think she is an evil wind bag :argue1:

I would have had words with her.

In the same vein. NROTC DS and civilian GF break up. I tell family member. Family member: “DS is too low class for GF I think”. Me: “Are you saying DS is not good enough for GF?”. Family member “Oh you know what I mean! HE IS GOING INTO THE NAVY!”. Ouch. Sad that people don’t recognize the exceptional caliber of our midshipmen.🤯

There was a reason James Bond is RN. 😉

That is an ouch indeed.

Surely associated "going into the navy" with enlisting and not a future member of the ward room.

Here’s the other side of this coin: I recently reconnected with a cousin on FB who saw some older posting of my DS during plebe summer 2+ years ago. She asked, “Your son goes to Annapolis? My son was going to go there but had a change of plans.” Heard that before. I replied politely that an appointment is quite competitive and requires a nomination etc. the usual stuff to introduce the uninformed. She replied, “Yea, I know all that. My son is an LT and was going to be billeted there for shore duty after his latest sea duty but orders changed. “Turns out she married a chief and her son is a SWO through OCS. Since then, she is one of my few relatives who gets it.

Ha, I have a similar story. My son had orders to TBS for instructor duty for his first B billet, shore duty, but instead went on a run of three operational billets before the first B billet. He's in the last few months of it now and has spent as much or more time in the field than his three previous commands.

Fortunately most people understand where he's been.

My DW always tries to explain, I just smile and agree with the nonsense falling out of their mouth. Kind of sounds like Charlie Browns school teacher to me.

There are some Judeo-Christian theologians who believe that killing is never justified, even in self defense. I certainly think they are in the minority. But I remember my DS telling me about discussions they had along those lines in his religious school (not in public school.) The different points of view were presented to him and discussed, but no one "right" answer was suggested or foist upon him.

Judaism doe not have an issue with personal and national self-defense. Judaism reads the 10 Commandments as "Do not Murder" and not "do not kill." There has always been a distinction between the two. Obviously, you can someone or some subset of the group that believes all killing is wrong, but Judaism, in general, has always seen the distinction.
