No 4 year scholarship if not a senior?

I just received an email today from UW in Seattle telling me I would not be able to compete for the 4 year scholarship as they are reserved for High School seniors. I am taking 2 gap years at the moment. I thought the requirements were that you be between the ages of 17 and 26? Do you have to be in High School when you apply for the 4 year scholarship? Here is the email:

Great to hear that you are interested in ROTC and I hope that we, here at UW, can help you in your desire to become an Army Officer. You can use your relatives address here in the States if you choose but let them know so they are expecting to receive mail and forward it on to you. I would also be sure to include an email and check it regularly since that is the most common form of communication. In regards to your interview you will be able to get that done in Japan without any problem-I believe that USACC has either a designated individual or has a set of guidelines that outlines who qualifies if you can’t have a PMS at a university do it.
The concern is that since you will not be a graduating high school senior when you are looking to apply you will not be able to compete for the 4 Year National Scholarship since they are reserved for graduating seniors. You will need to work closely with the PMS of the university that you choose to attend to apply for a campus based scholarship. If I can be of any assistance please let me know.

So I officially cannot apply for the full scholarship? Can I apply for the 2, 3, 4 year scholarships? Does it depend on the school? Like is this for only UW in Seattle and that I can apply to another school and try? Has anyone ever received a 4 year scholarship after taking a gap year?

Thank you!

I don't see anything in the Army literature that indicates that is correct. Are you currently enrolled in college or do they think you are perhaps? I think that you are eligible for a 4 year scholarship as long as you are going to be an entering freshman.

The high school Four-Year Scholarship is for high school students planning on attending a four-year college program. Contact your high school academic advisor or campus Military Science department for more information.

REQUIREMENTSBe a U.S. citizen
Be between the ages of 17 and 26
Have a high school GPA of at least 2.50
Have a high school diploma or equivalent

Score a minimum of 920 on the SAT (math/verbal) or 19 on the ACT (excluding the required writing test scores)
Meet physical standards
Agree to accept a commission and serve in the Army on Active Duty or in a Reserve Component (Army Reserve or Army National Guard)

That was my understanding too. I told them I was taking 2 gap years to raise money, because I don't want my parents to pay one bit for my college education. So yes, can UW be right about this? I emailed other schools and they did not mention this, about how I would not be able to compete for the 4 year scholarship. Should I apply for it anyway?
Is there a number I can call so I can speak to someone who would know a definite answer to this question?
Once again, thank you very much for your time.

No I am not currently in college. I'm taking 2 gap years, working full time.

Bruno - I think andrew is right - the AROTC 4 year scholarship is for high school students.
Once you are out of high school there are other options available to you.

If the Army awards you a 4 year scholarship that pays 100% of tuition, books and a monthly stipend, how many years do you think you need to work (gap) to cover room & board at UW? Perhaps it would be wiser to forgo the two year gap and pay back whatever (minimal) loans you need for R&B during your 4 years of active duty.

So I cannot apply for the 4 year army rotc scholarship? I checked the website again. Like Bruno stated, it says ages 17-26. Nothing about having to be a High School senior. If I can't apply for it, Just_A_Mom, what are some of the other options I have? Can I apply for the 2 and 3 year scholarships?
I really really hope I can still apply for the 4 year scholarship. I sent an email to cadet command about it.
Does anyone know for sure about this?
Thank you!

I just found this at: http://www.army.com/enlist/rotc-scholarships.html

The Army ROTC Four-Year Scholarship program is available to students who have graduated from high school or possess an equivalent certificate before September of the year they enter college.

Under General Eligibility Requirements:

Be a high school graduate or possess an equivalent certificate before September of the year you will enter college. If you are taking or have taken college courses, you must be considered a beginning Freshman and have 4 academic years remaining for a baccalaureate degree upon enrollment in the fall of the year you will enter college.

So does this mean I can still apply for the scholarship?

I have to confess that I just do not know the answer - I read the eligibility requirements as being a High School Graduate and Entering as a Freshman - it doesn't appear to say anything about how long it has been since you graduated as long as you are between 17-26, but I am not the expert by any means. Is there anyone on the forum who has a connection with Cadet Command who might be able to give Andrew some a more documented answer?

Have sent a PM to andrew with a contact at CC who was able to answer a change in CC procedure question for me earlier this year. Hopefully, this person will be able to help andrew as well.

That's an interesting phrase, beginning freshman. Does that that imply just hs seniors?

What about this section from the Four Year High School students GO Army page:

Seems to be for high school students.

I saw on the army website that the 4 year scholarship was for High School students, but the requirements clearly state that you have to be a High School graduate with a diploma by the September of the year you go to University, no college experience yet, so you have to be a freshman. I mean, it doesn't say anywhere that one MUST be a High School senior does it?
Ahhh, this is frustrating. I really want to apply for that scholarship.
Thank you for all your advice, feedback, and help!

Not a problem. Just post what you learn for others who may find themselves in a similar situation.
