I've been accepted into the Class of 2014 and on my Candidate Portal, there is a document that says that we are required to make a $2000 deposit by June 25.

My family is not very well-off and there is no way that we'll be able to make this payment, so are there any ways to obtain waivers for this fee?

Any help, including links, emails, or phone numbers, is greatly appreciated.

If you cannot make the payment, the $ will come out of your cadet pay. Many choose not to pay this--not to worry. Just let them know that you aren't paying it and they will let you know what forms to fill out to have it deducted from your pay.

Thank you so much for that information! That really takes a load off of my mind. But how will the money be deducted from my pay?

For example, will they take $200 a month for 10 months or something along those lines? And who do I contact to tell that I won't be able to pay? My admissions director?

Holy cow! $2000???? First time I ever heard anything like this...is there a specific reason why an ENROLLMENT DEPOSIT is so expensive? A civilian college I got into has a $200 deposit :confused: Whats the reason for this spectacularly high cost?

It's supposed to cover the initial costs of uniforms, books, equipment, etc.

I beleive the USCGA charges $3000 as the initial deposit. I see it as a small obstacle in an otherwise "free" education.

Exactly. $2,000 versus $200,000. I know which one my parents (and I) would rather pay.

You mean 450,000? I guess you could see it that way  positive thinking

But its still a hefty sum to pay in a lump :frown:

deposit

I think that if you were qualified to be accepted at USMA, you probably qualify for many local and national scholarships... look at your local service clubs like Elks, Lions, Rotary etc for scholarships... I bet you can find some to defray this deposit!

best wishes!

As mom3boys said, you don't have to pay it upfront, and can deduct it from your cadet pay. Also, you could a scholarship to defray the payment...just make sure the stipulations on the scholarship allow you to use it for the payment.

As a back up, just in case you aren't awarded any scholarship money (or not enough to cover the entire cost), you can also start saving for the payment now. We still have six months until R-day.

Oh yeah scholarships

I'll start looking on fastweb :frown:

I'm going to apply for as many scholarships as possible, but as far as taking it out of my pay:

How would that work? Do I simply call admissions and explain that I can't pay it and that I'd rather have it deducted from my Cadet pay?

If you've been accepted, don't you have a representative to contact on these matters? I made that initial deposit when I went, but a lot of my classmates didn't. As was said, not to worry. It'll all get straightened out on R-day if you still haven't figured it out by then.

The big costs are the uniforms and the computer. Without paying up front, the amount you are paid will be reduced, but I believe that it's amortized over the 4 years you're there. It's nice to have a little cash in the account. They typically have a good interest rate, and by your firstie year it's a nice lump sum of money that helps to pay for your Ring, and to buy new uniforms that you'll need when you're commissioned.

Thanks for the info! As far as a point of contact, I do have one (MAJ Burns) but I'm on Christmas break right now, and I have no phone service so I can't call him until I get back to school in a couple of weeks.

As far as getting it taken from my account, how much would I be paid if I have ALL of my expenses taken from my cadet pay as opposed to paying up front?

I have some friends who didn't make the payment and currently get paid $140 or so monthly instead of the full $200.

I applied to a last minute scholarship which covered so I suggest applying for some first.

PS: I sent you a PM.

Thanks a bunch! I'd rather go ahead and take the safe route and take the pay deduction. I'll apply for some scholarships but I'll use that as preparation money for R-Day.

Like people have said, scholarships. But also, and I know this may not apply to you, but you could ask for basically donations. For example, two years ago I went with a few people from my AFJROTC unit to the Air Force Academy. Total cost for each cadet was $360. Between two organizations, I was able to get all I needed plus some for souvenirs. Also, last summer I went to a leadership conference costing $2500 plus airfare. Between different local groups I was able to raise almost $1000 in a relatively short time period. Now as I said, this may not apply to everyone seeing as I come from a small town where many of these people have known me since I was born. However it is always worth a shot. =]
